The Combo Club

I joined the combo club recently(and the O-fficial Combo Club with a Capital C if y’all will have me). Here’s my Ashdown 550 Touring 115 I scored off Reverb from a local guy. According to him it was custom built for the NAMM show in 2011, where he bought it and then promptly put into storage. Literally never out of the original box in 7+ years! Using it for smaller gigs(I play in a noisy punk power trio, and my drummer is part gorilla, so compact/loud is essential), but capable of bigger gigs if I wanna—8 ohms, has extension speaker out, and doesn’t weigh as much as my 215! Takes pedals like a champ, and looks snazzy as heck.

. . . . Interesting. I'm not "dogging" your combo (because that's against club rules), but that was a box I couldn't check off my combo list. The clear signal, while an asset in some settings, diminishes the fun your particular amp offers, particularly the NuTube vibe and the preamp's tone. I know you didn't know that when you picked it up. I still wish it was post-EQ though, but that's my humble opinion only.

I'm with you there! I definitely prefer a post-EQ XLR Out and wish my Vox VX50BA had that. Funny, the opposite is probably the most common complaint I read about Rumbles on TB!

. . . . Ya know, I never seriously looked at the B and G-DECs at the time they were out because I always had something else in place of that amp type, but I know you've spoken quite highly about them so my gut tells me you'll do well with the lighter-weight G-DEC model. . . . .

Yes, I took a chance on the toyish looking B-DEC, first. It turned out to be such a LOT of fun!! And, for jams and small gigs it turned into just the perfect thing! Then, considering how much I already enjoyed a few years of my Cyber Deluxe for rhythm and lead playing, it wasn't long until I got the lighter weight G-DEC, too.

What did you have for bass and guitar modeling about 10 to 15 years ago?

. . . . All's well that ends well. What's cool is the Vox ended up being smack dab in the middle of the gig! Most importantly, there were no hard feelings as it was a Mexican Standoff, plus you never lost any time switching instruments. There's one thing you failed to mention though: how the heck did it sound? Did your service go well? Did the Vox's warmth fit in? Curious minds want to know. Thanks for sharing with us!

The Vox has been smack dab in the middle of the gig every Sunday morning since mid-November! And it's always done the job with grace and aplomb. Always sounding rich, full and either soft or punchy, as ordered by my playing technique. The rehearsals right before the service are sometimes rocky, due to the MD over-coaching the younger singers, or the guitarist doesn't really have his part down. But, after a prayer circle immediately before, the service always goes great!

And, as long as playing technique gets the right dynamics, the Vox has got a steady job, including bluegrass jams. But, the next time the church band plays our soft/distorted/soft/distorted/soft song, then the B-DEC w/footswitch will get the call!

. . . . Agreed. BTW, how much does your G-DEC weigh, and were you able to "easily" move it or was it pushing your back? I'm still thinking that down the road you'll end up with a Studio 40 and that takes care of everything you needed for that Sunday. In the meantime though, the VX50-BA has you covered.

Oh, the G-DEC is only about 21 lb., 12 less than the B-DEC, and just 2 more than the Studio 40, but 11 more than the Vox! So, it was no problem to handle. Actually, my back can probably handle the B-DEC just fine by now. But, as long as the Vox does the job, it'll get the call.

Yes, the Rumble Studio 40 WILL be mine, someday! But that day is postponed by both the B-DEC and the Vox, . . . . for now.

I am far from being an Ashdown expert, but I must admit I've never seen that particular combo before. How much power does that baby have inside it? Not only do you have a really neat story, it looks as you also have the exact amp to meet your needs. Congrats, and you are now the proud owner of #122 in our amp-loving group. I started on guitar, Strats/Teles/Les Pauls, and first used Line 6 Spider III and IVs, then their Bognar-designed Spider Valve combo. I definitely liked the tube amp's sound the best (less like a can of angry bees than the solid states), but then moved onto bass after that. Resale was pretty good for that one. Then my first, and only until 2018, bass amp modeler was the Fender Bronco 40 which I liked enough to buy two of them over a three-year period. A solid little bugger with what I thought were pretty decent tones and versatility. Admittedly, all pale in comparison to the latest Rumble modelers. if the LT25 sounds even a fraction as good as its bigger brother then I'll be one happy bass player. MF expects to ship on 3.14, but that's ten days later than the original expectation at the time I preordered it. I'm guessing early April, but that's fine.

Thank you, kind sir or ma'am! It's 600W RMS, solid state with a tube preamp. So....kinda loud. Just like I like it.
