The Combo Club

To all the combo kings and queens out there, with the addition of zon6c-f (#83) and rodl2005 (#84), we're now up to 85 members and looking good doing it too. Yeah, I know, we didn't reach the magic 100 number in June, but that'll give us something to work towards in July. All we need are 15 more combo-playing bassists to walk in those doors and say, "Sign me up!" In the meantime, kick back, enjoy the sizzling summer and great bass-centered conversation. Here's the current membership roster as of 10:44 PM CDT, Monday, the 2nd of July, 2018:

Well, Dodgeville, if memory serves me, is a pretty small town. It wouldn't surprise me if there was only one bass guitar there, maybe two...:woot:
True. They were having some sort of festival there. I was in town playing with a band(?)outta Kewanee, IL, at the time and was asked if it could be used by a couple of other players to which I agreed but I stayed on stage with it and played my sax with the others. I'm dredging up some faint memories here-we're talking 46 years ago('72)!:jawdrop: BTW(FWIW) I became its original-and only-caretaker in 1970.

Sign me up! I’m signing up for all
the cool clubs - combo playing, mediocre bassists...

Here's an enquiry into vintage bass combos for the gurus so inclined.

I don't remember a lot of details about my first bass amp, but it was a solid state 1971 EMC combo, single channel, 15" speaker, 100 watts (?), that looked something like this, but not exactly. Anyone know anything about such a thing?

Played my '71 Fender Mustang thru it for 2 years of college. Lots of fun. Pretty good sound!

The first giggable amp I owned was a combo: the (drum roll) Peavey TNT 100. :: runs, ducks, & hides ::

Yah, the Peavey, whatta beast. Scored a home rolled monster 1x15 from the guy I was hanging out with at the time. Was able to fit it all, plus my bass, in my Pontiac Sunbird POS special edition. Rig of shame.

Who didn't start on a TNT 100? A few years ago, I bought one for my former spouse shortly before we broke up (she also played, but was without an amp). Coincidence? It sounded about as bad as I remembered, but no worse, and it was just as loud. As soon as the rest of the band starts playing, it sounds ok.

My Ampeg B-100 Rocket Bass says I need a number.
I love that little amp. It has great tone, it is surprisingly loud, built like a tank, and it has a great retro (B-15) look. I do about 1/2 of my gigs with that amp. Many bass players have commented on the great tone of that little beast.

Yes. That's ^ the Peavey TNT 100. With the cab, the rig was impressively tall, and definitely audible. Featured in that high school hygiene class filmstrip Combo Madness.

Thanks for the number request, Shadven. I'll add you to our growing list in just a little bit. I've not gotten the opportunity to play through a B-100 combo, but have read numerous times how great it sounds. Thanks for stopping by!

Welcome, Nancy! How's the Jag? What combo do you have?

I’ve got an Ampeg BA110. How about you? And the new Jag is wonderful! I love it. It sounds fantastic through the Ampeg combo, much better than my Jazz which had a lot of electrical noise (can’t think of the term right now but you know what I mean m).

Hey Nancy1224! A combo-playing, mediocre bassist...just the ticket to needed to join our club. You're #85. Wear it proudly and join in on any conversation you see looks interesting. Thanks a bunch!

I think I’m going to like this club! Thanks :)
