The Combo Club

Don’t know who’s dishing out the numbers but here’s my combo.
Acoustic Image Corus R combo with an Upshot extension cab.

Lol! Up to the minute shot! My AI cab in it’s Moorsdian soft case is also doubling as my computer mouse pad!

He’s right, RR, schmackeroons are about as easy to get as talking Morrighan into carrying g an old Peavey TNT combo up three flights of stairs while wearing skates!

But hey, those pet swatches are nothing to sneeze about. Thank goodness we didn’t throw those darn things out when the club was being remodeled...in 1982!

Somebody please tell me how The Pup always seems to know when I need him to finish whatever lame brain idea I’ve floated out there? I say “re” and he comes out with “fried beans.” Amazing.

Who’s the club treasurer again? I want to double...no, triple G’Dog’s number of those solid pedal connectors I’ve been meaning to award him with for meritorious service. Somebody make a note of that.

Heading to Command Central!
Tangent story: when my aunt and uncle decided that they needed to convert the old car port into an extra room, they used a whole bunch of 2'x2' carpet samples that were about to be tossed out by a local carpet store. Glued them down, and made a really interesting floor. I have many great memories of playing in that room on family holidays.

Hey roccobass, I’m that guy and I am happy to make your acquaintance! That is quite a setup you have there, and there’s no double bass I’ve seen yet that doesn’t impress me with it’s size alone. Your amp rig is top-notch too and that makes it a pleasure add you to our already star-studded list.

By the power vested in me from Hank’s Air Conditioning and Wart Removal Service-southside, out of Kankakee, IL, I hereby award you with #201. Add it to your sig, tell your friends, and wear it with pride.

Someone’s always asking about the Acoustic Image line, and I don’t think we more than maybe one other who owns their products, so feel free to become our expert and respond to those who might test your brain. Congrats on your good taste and thanks for joining our club!
I stand humbly in a room studded with greatness and venerable knowledgeable players!! Thank you very much! I will add#201 to my signature! Sure, thing. I’ll answer any questions to the best of my ability. Can’t say enough about Acoustic Image. Thanks again!:woot:

How about a hunnert doller deal on a red Dub 4? :woot:

You’re gonna give me a sawbuck over my asking price? Wow! I’m not worthy, but the ‘lil red combo sure is. I’ll have to check with G’Dog to see if we have any deals left to give. Our treasury was looted in a heist that only could be called, “The Crime of the Minute!”

I really dunno if I want to sell it now, but if I did, you’re the only guy I’d sell it to. Well, maybe GP, but that’s it.

BTW, I did a second look at my board and my OD pedal was a little cockeyed (is it okay to write that?), though all the pedals are sitting flush on the board. The advice makes good sense, so I found some cheap, but colorful 6” cables at Ameezon and they’ll be here on Monday.

I am closing in on a cabinet though. Need to wait until Friday, and will order something then. RR, don’t tell anyone but I came into some unexpected cash that I wasn’t expecting  and could pull the trigger for both the 210 black Rumble cab and the 115 Rumble cab.

I am also thinking of either staying with my original Orange 112 idea or moving up to the Fender Pro Neo 115. I’ll never need another cab again.

So are you still serious about the PBJ?

HOLY BRICK CONSTRUCTION, BATMAN!

I mean, 21 pounds for an 8? I've got a 12 with 150 watts for just a bit more weight.

This explains why it was never on my list.

Plus, I think they’re ugly too. Maybe the robot on Lost in Space might use it, but note. Again, the entire line looks like portable generators. DISCLAIMER: I apologize if I offended any Roland owners. Rod made write it...

They’re looks it what, IMO, it sounds like too; gray, boxy, digital, boring. DISCLAIMER: I once again apologize if I offended any Roland owners. This time it wasn’t Rod who made me write it. It was Morrighan...

<checking all pockets...rustle...rustle...> Hmm, that's funny, I seem to be short some expected cash. :sour:

As far as getting a PJB, yep, still serious. Not sure if the deal on MF is still going. I really only want a red one. Because of an influencer I shall not name. Waiting to see if the most recent payment cleared. Was not cleared yet this morning.

Red's new white one does look great, but I would never be able to keep it clean more than a few minutes. Did see a blue one that looked fantastic, but I understand they are Japan only for some unknown reason.

Yep, we have struck again, again.

Blue, huh? Interesting. A dark blue? I’ll have to surf the oceans blue. I’m wondering, what would you be doing to the white combo to be concerned with getting it dirty? Are doing motocross rock band again? Thought you said you were giving that up for lint?

One more variation of the AI Upshot. I actually did buy it as a “combo” package along with the AI Clarus SL-2. By itself, does ok. I sometimes take it to practice with me as well the smaller gigs.

That is so cool, roccobass. Probably a question you get all the time, but how’s the bass response. I’m so used to a traditional cabinet, I have no idea what the bottom end on these is. In comparison to other cabs you’ve either owned or played, how does the AI rate? Are you satisfied with what you hear?

The package comes with it's own backpack, yes? Talk about an easy load-in (except for hauling the DB!)

b, very nice hearing from ya, I love the lurkers too. My man, you’re experiencing what I go through every so many months when I fall upon one of these Cubes and think, “Wouldn’t it be awesome to have one again?” Yes, I said again because I’ve chased the rabbit down that hole in earlier years and it didn’t last too long.

On paper, the Roland is a fantastic idea and I wish more companies would enter this market, but instead of four wimpy speakers which don’t play with any authority, IMHO, put in an eight or something that gives you the sense of bass notes.

That’s not my only complaint and again, this is my opinion. I owned umpteen Rolands over the last two decades and other than the Blues Cube Combo, the gray battery-looking models all sound inorganic...fake to me. I know, Mr. Picky, but Roland makes you pay top dollar for their amps and they sound like a robot birthed them!

On the Bass Cube I’d play a model for two minutes, think “meh” and click to the next one only to repeat again. Yep, there’s loads of features and it’s built like a brick poop house, for three bills new it’s a sonic disappointment. And don’t plan on jamming even with an acoustic guitar; dude will wipe you out with one A chord.

I totally get why you want it and everyone loves portable amps for back porch noodling, but I advise you as your combo cohort to, “Steer clear, Big Tuna, head to open waters.” Killed by Death, if I remember, likes to use his tiny Vox NuTube combo on the porch, but is still has to plug in. Trust me, it’s worth it!

Now if you buy it, we’ll love and respect you no less. Maybe there’s been an update or two since I had mine. Try playing through one if that’s possible at this time. If portability is crucial, then look at the Pignose 30-watt bass amp before buying. More power, bigger speaker, and cheaper if I’m now mistaken.

Okay, I’ve babbled on too long. Anyone else wanna chime in and safe this man some money? RR saved my pedal board this morning, I’m just paying it forward.

Edit: sorry, b, I forgot your hookup question. Yes, you can run from the Cube’s headphone out jack into the Rimble’s input jack. It would be a lot louder, no doubt. But how’s this for an idea? Instead of spending all that cash on a Cube, buy instead the baby Rumble modeling amp? You’ll get loads of models of amps and effects and it’ll sound a heck of a lot better. AND you’ll save money doing do because I’ve seen some around two hundred buckaroos. Go check it out.

Thank you so much for your detailed review and advice. It's somewhat strange to me though that I'm having a hard time finding negative reviews. The overwhelming majority view is positive - both in reviews on major music websites and youtube videos. But I also value advice from the coolest club on Talkbass!

My goal is a small, portable amp for practice only purposes. I have no expectation that 5 watts through 4 mini speakers is going to be anywhere near robust and full bodied. The amp models and effects are just "fun fluff" to me, however the built in rhythm section is pretty cool and would be helpful to me in practice situations. I am considering the Blackstar fly system too (both units) as it would meet my desire for portability. I've read of problems with the battery on the pignoses, but may consider that as well.

Your suggestion on the Rumble Studio 40 has crossed my mind as well, but seems overkill for my wants and definitely not as portable. When I play with the band, I'm straight jacked in my 500c and get all I need through the EQ and voicings on the amp and of course technique.

Here's an interesting comparison of the Roland base cube vs PJB double 4 vs Markbass minimark vs AER amp one. Yea, the Roland is "thinner" than the other amps, but considering 5 watts vs 75/80 and larger speakers, it fares pretty well in this comparison...

Again, thanks so much for your valued input! I'll pull the trigger at some point (on something) and give you guys my review/thoughts.
