My dad was a train enthusiast too and worked for the Santa Fe Railroad in California. I learned at a young age all the different types of cars and can still point out a gondola at first sight!

Plus, I enjoy playing that song too.

I redubbed the song onto a cassette with train sounds at the beginning and end. Fade in, fade out. Crossing signal bells, diesel sounds. etc. Pretty cool, all in all.

I am looking for any and all recommendations on acquiring a new combo. I currently have an Orange amp that is great, but it is one-trick pony and I'm looking to get something a big bigger with greater options for tone. I have no brand preference or prejudice, but am prioritizing tone/features over size and wattage as this will almost 100% be used for studio and home practice use. If it has 200-300 watts and can do gigs, great! But it is not something I am realistically going to be doing for a while. I play prog/rock/metal doom stuff, and use a decent amount of pedals. If Orange is the right home for me, then so be it. I just wanted to explore what other options are out there. I am also looking to spend less than $1,000.

What model of Orange amp do you have now?

I believe I've talked about John Hiatt here before. He has a song at the end of the album Walk On that features a train getting closer, thundering by, and fading out into the distance. I don't know how it was recorded, but it's absolutely haunting. Used to drive our cat crazy.

Hi, Cho! Welcome to TalkBass in general and The Combo Club in particular. You've come to the right place.

I enjoy and recommend the Fender Rumble combos for great tone, light weight and reasonable price. They make various sizes/power from 15 watts to 800 watts, including some with modeling capabilities. Here's a list of features of the various models. The 200 and 500 require an external 8 ohm speaker cab to give full nameplate power. Browse to see what catches your eye.

If you prefer your own pedals, the silver-grille Rumbles 15 to 500 are great for that. Here's a list of features of the various models. Two of the 100, 200 & 500 combos can very easily be chained together via their FX loops for one's controls to run both!

If you're open to digital bass modeling technology that could, but doesn't have to, replace your pedals then the black-grille Rumbles LT25, Studio 40 or Stage 800 are just the thing. The Stage 800 requires an 8 ohm speaker cab to give full nameplate power, but can drive two 8 ohm cabs, if desired. The Studio 40 & Stage 800 have identical preamps, firmware, and software, just different power amps and speakers. The LT25 has a subset of the firmware & software features and much less connectivity.

The ultra lightweight Invalid Link Removed also have Class D power amps, but with a very retro-tubey look. Lotsa room in the head for cables and such. I love my Bm500 and think of it as a Rumble 500 head but with all the bells and whistles!

Ah, well seen. It's the Orange Terror what holds my fleeting attention in amplification right now. I've no current need for more. What I've a current need for is a situation to use all the amplification I have now (just like a whole lot of people). My actual needs at the moment are more than met. And reporting a DI > DAW > Computer with headphone monitoring is where I find myself. Hard to get anyone to give me a listen with proper social distancing without a recording.

And that DI out of the PBJ BG-400 is surprisingly giving, from what I hear. I've got the limiter on, and that does effect the output. Actual scientific tests of an exercise with and without the limiter engaged are at this point entirely speculative.

What I'm guessing is were I to own a Rumble, and to play through it with my Chowny CHB-1, I'd be using that Vintage button. :: nod :: A Rumble 100 would carry a lot of rooms

but so will everything else I have (and then some)

Not personally, no. My understanding is they are popular with the DB folks. The Flightcase seems well received by the DB crowd too. The Flightcase gets extra oomph from PJB powered cabs. I don't see the powered cabs are in their current offerings, though.

Super neat-o daddy-o among the current offerings is the C2 cab. Half a C4 and about 16 pounds. That'd be worth the carry with the Elf for light duty (where's the devil and angel on my shoulders emoticon?)

Ah yes my friend, but only one is the proper close of a beautiful Hiatt album.

Phil Jones really likes to get some mileage out of his cabinet designs. Cub, C2, and PB-100 in that size, and similiar twins in the C4 size. Hoping to someday be able to justify a BG-400/C4 setup like yours, or at least adding a PB-300.
