The Combo Club

GP - Kasino ext cab
RR - Zon Sonus 8
FL - Ampeg B-100R
GD - Rumble Stage 800
Recon- Any tube-powered combo, cause I’m a nerd and think vacuum-controlled electrons are cool.
Miles: Fender PS400 amp (Recon, you'd love it) . And bring Rich Koerner back to get me up to speed on maintenance.

I know it kind of sounds low-endian but right now what I'd like to see most under the Festivus Pole is

M — a new Hagstrom Swede in cherry.

A Hagstrom was almost my choice.

Attached is a picture (not my pic) of what my first bass was back in '90 or '91 through about '94. It's a Kay K-2B. It wasn't a great bass but if I could find one in blue like mine was I'd buy it. I wouldn't leave it stock, but I still want one. It's short scale too. I should buy a real Gibson EB model, but I want my original for some dumb reason.

I was. The Bugera BXD12 is 1000w.
You can’t buy a decent 1000w head for $350. I spent a few minutes searching without turning up actual specs from the mfr or a retailer, just “1,000 watts” and technobabble. Nor could I find a photo of the back with enough detail to read input current to compute wattage. This is highly suspicious, so I was not surprised to find reviews suggesting its use as a practice amp or via DI for stage use.
This hearkens back to the marketing wattage wars of the 60s and 70s, especially for stereos. An amp might be called a 200 watt amp, but that was “peak power” for very brief transients. It would be 100 watts program (longer but still brief peaks), and 50 watts music, continuous, or RMS power.
While it’s possible the Bugera could do 250 RMS, I’d be surprised at the price, unless it’s Behringer everywhere but the name plate.

Hmmm, still cheap at only twice the price of the Fender 400 PS head in 1970! In today's equivalent dollars it would be just $4800.
... Actually, Roddy, the Rumble Stage 800 combo is "only" 400 watts continuous into its internal 2x10 speakers. Still, that is a significant technological leap in just 39 lb.s compared to the comparative "tons" for the 400 PS head and three 18" CV reflex cabs.
... The RS800c needs an 8 ohm, or 4 ohm, cab to reach the full 800W. That's right, you could even connect two (2) 8 ohm 410 cabs to the RS800c for maximum SPL! :woot:
.

Really unique setup. G'Dog, what's the ballpark estimate for how much a cabinet and the head weigh? I'm gonna go (and have not looked it up as I'm feeling lazy right now) with 60 lbs for the head and one ton for a single cab. How'd I do?

Iago, the linked article above says the head is "just" 76 lb.s compared to 85 for an SVT. This other 400 PS article says the head is 84 lb.s. It also says the cab is 126 lb.s! So, 84 + (3 x 126) = 462 lb.s for the full rig! Whew! That's what roadies are for. ;)
.
... Remember though, the Stage 800 will allow you to go down to 2.67 ohms before the amp calls for Mommy. That would mean up to 610s (the combo's 210s and two additional 210 cabinets) or whatever configuration you wish to assault ears with. Kinda cool. G'dog, does the Rumbler Club have anyone on the official insanity list who's actually done the feat? Courage I have not.

Iago, I've been consistently recommending a pair of 8 ohm 410 cabs to all Rumbling Stage users for 10x10s of max SPL! But, to my knowledge, no one has connected any two cabs to one, yet.

(PS: I also recommend four (4!) 410s for the 2 ohm stable Rumble 800 HD head for 16x10s of SPL, but, again, no takers that I know of.)

84 pounds for the head. The iron alone is probably 60 pounds or darned close.

Ticks a lot of boxes for me! Single cut, humbuckers, passive — it's sure to have a voice not like many other basses beyond the Gibson borders.
My first guitar was a Hagstrom 1. I still have it (with heavily modded electronics and no vinyl back). I’d love a matching bass but can’t justify it right now.

Isn’t this fun? I wasn’t so sure I’d get anyone to follow along with this crazy idea, but I’ve enjoyed seeing what everyone has on their wish list. Keep going, CC!

Thank you, my compadre. That’s a lot of beef, and I’m talking about all of your configurations!

Thanks for the backup, M_ON. As an old stereo buff and sales dude back in the early eighties, we’d sell a used 50-wTt Marantz receiver or integrated amp that you could drive all day long and it’d sound great doing it. Then compare it to a 100-watt Technics or Pioneer receiver and the latter wouldn’t hold a candle.

Flabby bass, no dynamics, and sterile sounding. Heck, our 20-watt NAD integrated would trash the big boys because they had balls and great dynamics. It’s no different here with the bass amps.

That being said, the Bugera amps do have happy owners who love the sound a lot. I’ve even read that here in TB. To each his/her own.

Im not a tech-head but this is what I found on an Amazon review:
Quote:When I first plugged it in and hooked a regular bass guitar to it I thought 'This sounds more like a 100 to 150 watt amp'. so I flipped it around and guess what it says 140 watts on the back of it. This is clearly FALSE ADVERTISING. Just because their High-voltage MOSFET preamplifier and Revolutionary Class-D amplifier technology will give you 10 times the wattage that it is rated for ,a second or two, without exploding you can't or at least shouldn't rate it at that power level.

I found other owners saying that it's not 1000RMS. Peak power is a way of lying without breaking the law. If they claimed 1000RMS, that would be breaking the law. GK make an 800w combo, but that could be another one that needs outboard speakers for the full 800.

Well, the guy selling the Carvin combo couldn't wait for me to find the time to pick it up, so he sold it. Can't say as I blame him. He probably got his asking price too. It ain't easy being essential. In other (better) news, I may actually get a day off next weekend!

Still looking for a perk for being labeled “essential.” You found one yet, Bigs? Not that I need to be bribed if anything, but other than being the second group in line for the vaccine, I can’t find anything. Maybe a Dunkin Donuts coupon or something?

Have a great day, folks!
