The Combo Club

Stage 800 continued:
I was suitably impressed with the efficiency of the Rumble Stage 800 at last night’s gig. Having spent time ‘polishing’ patches I was struck by the headroom and clarity it has now.

Couple that with the usual combo amp efficiency of setup, breakdown and transport and I’m deeming this amp a winner!

Power-wise it has enough output to compete easily with my much larger/heavier vintage Acoustic 126 and looks just vintage enough to fit the retro mood of The Rockits.

I could easily dial in anything I’ve ever asked from an amp in that environment plus Bluetooth makes it super easy to make quick adjustments with my cell phone, which also contained the set list.

I have actually changed my mind about the speaker sim function. I think Fender may have actually planned the cabinet portion of this combo to be flat or neutral sounding. Enough that the sims actually sound pleasing enough to be used. I had previously used powered p.a. speakers e.q.’d flat for my Sunday morning worship work and this sounds just as good or better, now that the patches are groomed.

Doesn’t hurt that it’s one-piece plug ‘n play, unlike my previous setup of multiple semi-heavy pieces. My rack containing the Eleven Rack etc. is about 45 lbs, the EV exl 112p weighs about 42 lbs so I’m accomplishing the same goals with a single 39 lb device and zero external connections. Works for me.
Good for you. But I have a great fondness for the Acoustic combo you have in your avatar!

[ Maybe I should get help to haul it out more often, if it's cool now. It's just that I don't know what it's rated for. When I was given it I was told, "here's a bass cab you can have" and all my questions were met with looks as if I was speaking a foreign language. Maybe it's hot!?!. It says "8 ohms" on the back, but that's all I know.

Oops! This ain't combo related. Fearless Leader will have my head! Uh, ...
You can put a Peavey Combo on it for thunderous power! And yes, Peavey silverfins were always cool. During the late 70's and throughout the entire 80's and into the 90's we played Peaveys (among other amps) and we were an excellent touring band. Never were we embarrassed by our gear because people never judged us by our gear. So yeah, Peavey has ALWAYS been cool. At least the 80's stuff.........

I agree, putting a Combo on top if the 115 has a thunderous effect, improves overall sound, and weren't the 115's always related to the Combo's?

At least for the truly cool brands, " PEAVEY : )

Been rocking a combo as my main rig for about 5 years starting with a modified Carvin 515. I replaced the head with a Markbass Little Mark III and upgraded the 15 to an Eminence 3015HO. Then I set out to get or build the best sounding, loudest combo for it's size and weight 2 years ago. It's a custom Greenboy Fearless F112 with a shallow 2 space rack attached. I filled that with a Markbass 1,000 watt Ninja head. I haven't seen anything on the market that would be better. I'm not bashing, just my opinion. Oh--it's 20x16x16 and weighs 44 lbs. I guess I'll have to add pics later. I just tried and my pics folder is empty....all I could find were old pics from the builder with the then Markbass Tube 800 head. DanGR, congratulations and welcome to the only Combo Club you'll find on the planet! You are #108, my friend, and with your love of combined, I say you deserve to be in our group. 1,000 watts and only 44 lbs. is quite a feat. It reminds me a little of an SWR Redhead in the way it's laid out. More than twice the power and half the weight though. Isn't technology great?

Feel free to mingle around the place. We have kicked around getting new carpeting and wall hangings for the clubhouse, but everyone's out looking at amps for the holidays, and who can blame them? We're a fun group who never knocks a brand or model, and we also love reviews. If you know of any other combo lovers please send them our way. Once again, welcome!

Was clearing out some space on my mobile and came across these pics. My two GK combos, the MB212-ii and its little brother the 112-ii. Im really happy with both of them, sound great and super portable.

F-walZ, our resident G-K enthusiast. How ya been? That's a really nice combination for small and large gigs alike. Has your 212 ever not been enough for you at a gig? I'm gonna guess no, but was curious. Do you ever DI out or just let her run au naturel?

I want to be on GP's Christmas card list. I would be willing to bet it is he, Mrs Plaid, and the fam in front of that same garage door. That is where all the Plaid photos are taken.

Just kidding, still love the pics. Just can't not poke fun at the garage door poses.

GP, don't listen to OFB or anyone else for that matter. Some people are proud of their garage doors and that's all there is to it. Some people even think it's the best-looking part of their house. Maybe GP is really happy with his garage door and likes to show it off. Back off, people, and show some respect. Maybe one day he'll open it up and we can see inside! I got yer back, GonePlaid.

Ghost, can we see a gigging pic sometime? I'm interested in how it sits in the backline. I'm thinking it still has to be up off the floor, but I'd like to spy at what you're doing. Thanks a bunch. Why am I asking??? IT's officially on the Christmas Wish List (along with a new Am Jazzer, Ampeg PF-50T, and world peace). Mrs. Fearless Leader said she's greenlighting my holiday project of at least one of these items. Boy, that bump on the head causing amnesia really did the trick!

Snuck one in, didn't ya, P-Thrasher? Your head I will have, but not until you tell us just how loud the Peavey rigs are in real life? I'm guessing...thunderous? BTW, great pic. They're in wonderful condition.

Does it come off as bass heavy on the floor/stage?
The stage in the very dark photo is the room it was essentially purchased for. It’s a 650 upholstered seat auditorium with a flown-mains installed subs 60000+ watt sound system with mega-lows so if the 800 is bass heavy it goes unnoticed :woot:.
To your question I chose the most extreme low-end roll-off in global settings and that gave me a cleaner bottom, which I prefer to girth.

Yes I’m D.I. out, that’s post and on the lowest setting, as well.

Tweeter is on to give me the fullest range for more accurate monitoring, but I’m a one iem guy in that environment also and the bass is in my ear a bit, as well.

I’ve done the direct-only route and was relieved to use an amp again when we moved to the larger space. Some of it is the inspiration of a good thump behind me and so far it’s been flat on the stage floor.

I’ve thought about an isolation platform but I don’t think I’ll go the stand route. Once my foot is fully healed and extravagance kicks in, I’ll probably experiment with adding the 2x8 cab of the TC Electronic combo to get the sound closer to my ear and add headroom.

Oh...I have a Rumble rig that I like equally as well, just on a different end of the tonal spectrum from GK. Both sound great and I will use one or the other depending on the gig and the tone im after:)
No, the 212 has never not been enough, however on smaller stages when your real close the 12's can sometimes be blowing past you or at the back of your knee's, making it harder to hear. Ive found that the key is to get it up off the floor a bit and/or angled up, set it up on a roadcase, stand, etc, this helps a ton. Ive played large outdoor stages and have yet to have it more than 30-40% of whats its capable of. I do use the onboard DI's but have been seriously thinking of grabbing a good passive Radial to keep in my gig bag.

The (Combo 300's) outboard 115's are real sleepers. Look stock, but loaded with JBL E140's, and they can be loud, like painful.

Fortunately, (I am 55, and my hearing is still good) at lower volumes they still sound very powerful, and depending on the amp, bass, and settings, can be everything between clean, and raunchy. The fact that these old 40 year old cabinets are still buzz free... Well, Mr. Peavey sold us quality goods : )

The little teenie tiny itsy bitsy Peavey Head the bass is plugged into is getting built into a (relatively) lightweight Tweed Combo that I am building, cuz I do love Combos : )

May I please have a Combo Club number?

Combo number? Heck, with all that Peavey I'll give ya an entire zip code! Did ya see how excited Alaska got? I could hear the guy panting from Iowa. You, our newest bass amp brotha, are #109. Enjoy the many perks and free gear offers that are available through G-Dog. Doggie, set him up with whatever we have laying around. P-Thrasher, don't be a stranger either.

Updated roster list coming soon!

Thank you, my friend, for the wonderful analysis. You are single-handedly making that amplifier sound like it's the one we've all been looking to own. As I've mentioned many times, I love my Ampeg rig, but I have to admit a one-piece, do-all bass amp is very intriguing. As Morrighan said, it's calendar-worthy, and December may be it.

Are you using the floor pedal it comes shipped with? How's the tuner? The tuner for the Bronco was meh at best, especially on the computer. Other than losing my volume pedal on my Zoom, that Fender is truly one-stop shopping. Thanks again Ghosty, keep us posted on any further developments. I'd be interested in how the 2-8s would sound with it, as I'm thinking of pairing it with a PF-210 cab. I know, different beasts, but I'm thinking I could dial the two in together.

Time for me to join this club. In the past, my gigs required muscle. My amp of choice was a TecAmp Puma 900 and AudioKinesis TC115. But those gigs have all but dried up. Now I'm playing either duo gigs or church gigs with full PA support.

Picked up a Henriksen The Blu and couldn't be happier. I've done a couple of church gigs with it and it was perfect. Full PA support with the only person needing to hear my amp is me. Next week I'll have my first duo gig with the amp. I'll need a little more sound as the PA is just a filler. I'll pair The Blu up with a Crazy 8 cab.

And here are some pics from the first gig.
