The Combo Club

The (Combo 300's) outboard 115's are real sleepers. Look stock, but loaded with JBL E140's, and they can be loud, like painful.

Fortunately, (I am 55, and my hearing is still good) at lower volumes they still sound very powerful, and depending on the amp, bass, and settings, can be everything between clean, and raunchy. The fact that these old 40 year old cabinets are still buzz free... Well, Mr. Peavey sold us quality goods : )

The little teenie tiny itsy bitsy Peavey Head the bass is plugged into is getting built into a (relatively) lightweight Tweed Combo that I am building, cuz I do love Combos : )

May I please have a Combo Club number?

Combo number? Heck, with all that Peavey I'll give ya an entire zip code! Did ya see how excited Alaska got? I could hear the guy panting from Iowa. You, our newest bass amp brotha, are #109. Enjoy the many perks and free gear offers that are available through G-Dog. Doggie, set him up with whatever we have laying around. P-Thrasher, don't be a stranger either.

Updated roster list coming soon!

Hey, Pontiac! Do you ever play a Firebird thru that rig? Hahaha! That's a good one. :roflmao:

Welcome to the Club. Here's your key to the Clubhouse. There should always be some grub in the commissary, if you're hungry, and if GonePlaid hasn't been there recently. (I swear, you'd think he's a teenager the amount of food he puts away, especially after a gig!) Luigi (not his real name) can cook up just about anything, given enough notice. And, if he ain't got it, Luigi can prob'ly get it!

Enjoy the widescreen 4K TV our Fearless Leader, iagtrplyr, got us and don't fight over the channels, else you'll be sent off to the old lounge area with the tube TV. Funny, even the tube amp fans don't like that TV. ;) Sorry, but the TV/ISP/Phone service keeps changing as our members keep finding "better deals", but each one has it's advantages and disadvantages, so the search continues. The current wifi password is "oVerdRive731".

HERE'S THE LIBRARY! IT HAS EVERY RECORDING EVER MADE, AND PROBABLY THE CHARTS AND/OR TABS, TOO. SORRY, WE'RE STILL WORKING ON SOUND PROOFING THE PRACTICE BOOTHS. THE GUYS ARE BUILDING A STUDIO OUT BACK, AND WHILE IT'S GONNA TAKE A WHILE TO GET ALL THE EQUIPMENT EVERYBODY WANTS, THERE'S SOME REALLY GOOD USED STUFF IN THERE NOW!

The Swag Shop over here keeps us well supplied with picks, even if lots of us don't use 'em, and earplugs, even if lots of us don't use 'em. Ugh, shoulda got some plugs before going in the library. Are your ears still ringing? My ears are still ringing! Ok, . . . uh, ... lanyards for your backstage passes, cheapo clip-on tuners, that kinda stuff. alaskaleftybass donated some refurbished instrument cables for emergency use, but I been using one for a long time now. They're really pretty good! Everyone donates their slightly used strings to help each other out, when needed. There's even some used cell phones, if you need one. Morrighan's working on a deal with a major supplier for new strings, cables, straps and things that'll really make the dues a tremendous bargain.

The bunk room gets use from touring bands and those of us that give in to g.a.s. without checking with our significant other. Main rule in there is keep your bunk clean! There was this drummer one time . . . well, you can imagine!!

So, make yourself at home. Good to have you with us. Welcome to The Combo Club.

And in news wholly unrelated to combo amps except as regards a combo amp player ....

It's about a fifteen minute walk on a frosty morning

20181112_093931.jpg

that is really more about playing bass than one might imagine. And many a freezing day spent in that sort of clime where over time appear to pick up a habit of steeling my body from the cold. It's up in Fargo, North Dakota, where my friends at work observe the sudden onset of Tourette's the moment I step outside. Much of this tension settles on my left shoulder. The same shoulder I use to hang my bass.

The pain I feel is tendonitis from calcium and a touch of arthritis means it hurts to use my basses. Off to physical therapy it is.

At the other end of this yellow carpet is my doctor. X-rays, all this and remanded to physical therapy because ... because the combination of the work of the physical therapists and the work I complete reduced the calcium deposits to the point where nearly all that remains is the tendonitis. No surgery indicated. No return visit to that doctor. Back to physical therapy and we'll call that a good hand dealt.

And in all this exposition the point is new awareness of how I hold my shoulders in the way I learned to steel myself from the cold in both metaphorical and literal senses.

Very much aware of how I hold my entire body as I play my basses. In this I observe how much less tension I hold when I move - may I say, dance? - as I play. Say this to my doctor - I learned to move my body around the pain I felt and it results in a distortion. Now I learn to move my body so it doesn't create pain.

Which brings me to how I moved my Peavey when I gigged that ....

Uh, oh, I may have inadvertently drawn the gaze of the TB moderators eyes this way, so . . . .

I know everyone is interested in my progress with my latest combo amp, the Vox VX50BA. I'm feeling better about it every time I use it. To recap, the 9.9 lb. weight is just what my back needs as I recover from minor back surgery for pinched nerves.

But, the tone continues to either actually improve with the speaker break-in, or it just grows on me as I get more comfortable with the controls. I'm really looking forward to using it this Sunday in resuming my church gig after a 5 month absence.

I wonder how @Killed_by_Death is doing with his new VX50BA?

It does seem to get better with age.
Maybe one day they'll make a bass head like this & I can get a 2x10" hooked up to it.

I started to say "use the Direct Out to the 210 combo of your choice", but then I remembered, this "true Direct Out" would be just like plugging your bass directly into the 210 combo. Doh!

Yeah, why don't they make a MV50 Bass head? (sigh)

Could you (haven't read the fine manual) run the direct out of the Vox VX50BA to a powered cab?

You can but, as KBD has confirmed, my disappointed discovery is that this "true DI" sends out the completely unchanged input signal only. Might as well plug your bass directly into the powered cab, or 210 combo (using either the regular input like a regular combo, or the FX Return like a powered cab). You get zero preamp from VX50BA in it's Direct Out!

Time for me to join this club. In the past, my gigs required muscle. My amp of choice was a TecAmp Puma 900 and AudioKinesis TC115. But those gigs have all but dried up. Now I'm playing either duo gigs or church gigs with full PA support.

Picked up a Henriksen The Blu and couldn't be happier. I've done a couple of church gigs with it and it was perfect. Full PA support with the only person needing to hear my amp is me. Next week I'll have my first duo gig with the amp. I'll need a little more sound as the PA is just a filler. I'll pair The Blu up with a Crazy 8 cab.

And here are some pics from the first gig.

LeonD, welcome to the hottest club in the land. you are the 109th smartest bass player on the planet and because of that, we salute you! A great looking rig you have there. I myself am not familiar with your Henriksen combo. Could you offer the ignorant a little info about it? Stature-wise, it reminds me of my Markbass Micromark 801. I'm guessing a clean, jazzy tone with a more neutral character. Of course, I could be wrong.

Thanks for enlisting with the CC. G-Dog, our Sargeant-at-Arms, gave a wonderful tour of the place to our last recruit, DanGR. BTW, thanks very much, 'Dog. I knew the $50,000 a year was well-spent. Oops, we weren't supposed to talk salary in public, were we? Sorry. Hey, if the rest of you blokes need fast cash, you know who to ask it from.

Welcome aboard, LeonD!

Thank you for the update, G-Dog. Haven't heard about the little red and black combo from either you or KbD of late. Breaking in period is always fun. So what's the bass like in terms of how much compared to a comparably-sized amp? I'm thinking compared to another 8" combo, but does it haul enough bass information to rival a single ten? Like you mentioned, I believe, I wish it had an emulated sound coming out of the output jack. Seriously, what's the point of touting the NuTube if you aren't gonna allow it's splendor to shine through. But congrats to both you and Killed_by_Death for taking the plunge into new territory.

speaking of new, Peavey fans, what say you about the new Max series of combos? Anyone hear them or are they not out yet? I see a late-November shi[pping date at GC. Maybe nothing different under the hood, but they look sharp. Just asking...

As a point of clarification, I don't 'hate' my Max 110. I just never have been able to get the tone I want out of it. I came pretty close here at the homestead, but couldn't duplicate it on the gig. However, I'm loving the tone(s) I get from my Rumble 200c @ home or out and about w/ minor 'tweaking' from my basic set-up.:)
