Here is a rare one (I'm not related to this auction):

Apart from mine (which I had a luthier custom made it), it is the only 6 string explorer bass in existence that I know of.
I'm not sure about those small pictures for a bass of $2950 price, though.

Here's my Explorer. All I can say Gibson have ALOT and I mean ALOT of explaining to do with the several design flaws with this bass. The headstock in this model had extremely poor string pull. The D and G had to be strung backwards otherwise they'd pop out of the nut and eventually the string pull snapped the Bone nut at the G string. I had to get a brass nut made for it and install a string retainer in the headstock just to to make it useable. Other than that she balances perfectly. Plays like a dream and sounds amazing, maybe me replacing the pickups with Seymour Duncan Bass Blackouts, installing the Blackout Preamp (wired to 18v) and replacing the bridge with a hipshot one may of helped. In the end great bass but I would of though by now Gibson would know how to design a bass!

I am currently having an Explorer body made. I chose to have the body made from Poplar because to my knowledge it is one of the lighter hardwoods. I have played 3 basses long term since age 14, I'm 49 now. Currently a Gamma Alpha P, in the past a Guild Pilot and a Hondo Explorer. I am trying to figure out what style neck to put on it. Does it matter what style neck is put on it. I've never had to think about it, nor do I want to have to think about it...so does it matrer, keep in mind I play fast songs all under 3.5 minutes, most 2 min, and have been playing this style for as lobg as I've been playing.
I'm in. 5 string Explorer .....kit build I did last year. Waiting for a brass nut to arrive.

Thanks, it's called Sunset Orange Metallic, a '70s Corvette color. Really varies depending on how the light hits it.
This was sad, lonely and relatively unplayed (and cheap) at the store. It sounded better than the Aria ZZB they had next to it. Should be a cool stage bass when my guitar player and I both play our explorers. It's light and doesn't neck dive, thank god.

It's a Hondo body that I mounted a G&L L2500 neck to. It originally had just the neck pickup so I added a mirrored bridge pickup, Entwistle style. Two EMG 5 string P pickups. Kept the original tele style control plate and wired it with a three way switch and passive controls. I don't remember the brand of the bridge, but it was cheap and surprising well made. I also put Ultralite tuners on the neck.
