The Great Bass Preamp/DI Comparison

I started with a TNT 115 and a Peavey Dynabass. That TNT got trashed on pretty heavily in my college dorm but kept on thumping. I think it even rolled down a small flight of stairs and wasn't any worse off for it. Indestructible gear.

15 years after i got rid of my tnt, i found it on stage at a ski resort as the house rig. Still as functional as before lol

More should come later in May, hopefully! And by its page layout and everything, it looks like it will be offered like the P-15. That is, through weekly (eventually, hopefully) through random batch drops.

@scubaduba I can get a lot of the heft I get on the Oracle with mids at 300ish EQ, dial at around 2.5, rest of the settings to your "tube tone". It doesn't funk nearly as hard per note as the Oracle, but it sounds so good anyways....

I'm going to miss the Oracle.

Selling the Oracle in favor of the Grace ALiX?

I may give the REDDI another shot. I have been using GarageBand lately to share tracks with a friend. I started using the "hifi" DI (based on the Avalon U5) for my first tracks. They weren't quite what I wanted so I started adding in a little of the "classic" head (based on a B-15) for a little more umph. That helped. I'm going about 75/25 Avalon/Ampeg.

I've never been a P bass guy either. But have been using a p with flats a lot lately. Funny how your tastes/ears change.

Me too, but hey, maybe not everyone shares the idea of discussing preamps in the preamp thread? Who knew:)
This is a terrific thread, in which we ARE discussing real preamps based on real playing experience. In the case of the Broughton, we are mainly talking about a picture at this point. If enough of them get out there, such that players can actually try them, then we will have a different discussion.:)

Seriously, Broughton is kind of like the stomp box version of the HG Thor fretless fingerboard coatings. Super high quality products; but, just nowhere near any kind of practical realm of availability. If that kind of exclusivity confers "special" on the owners, by all means have at it. The rest of us have gigs to play.

There are a lot of stompbox Super Stack owners out there. I am assuming the Super Stack DI shares some similarities. Much like the Zephyr to Oracle relationship. So I dont think we are really just talking about a picture. There is more context.

I don't doubt the circuits exist and that certain players who are special enough to get them will like them. Same thing with the Thor coatings. I just don't have time for that. And that's coming from someone who just waited roughly a year each for a couple of bass builds. I have patience. Just not that much.

It's a very interesting pedal and the EQ is very powerful. I'm not sure I'd put a pedal like that in my bass pedalboard. I see it more like a studio console, it would be perfect for quick direct recording. My audio interface is a Phil Jones HA-2 (Bighead Pro) and it's only input is 1/4. I wonder if the HPF and LPF on the QStrip work only on the XLR out. An adaptor or a DI>1/4 jack cable should do the trick anyway.
I see the utility of this pedal also in combination with the SLO. In its effects loop, before or after it.

The HPF/LPF goes through the 1/4" out as well. (The parallel out is a direct through from the input jack though).

5sg.

Curious how many need to be available in the first run? I think somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 will be out in the wild shortly.

I have preamps that I know are one of one, so not really worth mentioning. But once there are 50 to 100 or so available and most are here on TB I think that's worthy of a discussion.

Looking at the gut shot pics, it looks to have the same architecture as the P-15 and the SuperStack "front" has been around for a while. Both of these do lots of gigs for people. At one point, the Oracle was picture on a website. It still has to be built before you can buy it too. Same with a Noble. Unless you can luck into a used one. Both are in most of the recent discussions. Any time a new Broughton product is announced, it's very hard to get due to a rather enthusiastic customer base and a one man workforce. I've been discouraged a few times at not being able to get in on one of the first batch's of a new tube toy. I get over it and wait for the next batch if I'm interested enough. For the products that I've been interested in, it's 100% worth it.
My point is, it is real, (If in limited numbers currently) and I'll post some thoughts about it when it arrives for those that are interested. You must be lucky. I wish I had gigs to play right now.
Next week should be a busy one though. Oracle, ALiX and the SSDI should all show up. The first two have to cross a border so I'm kinda crossing my fingers on that.

Agreed. They just need a certain, perhaps unquantifiable, level of availability.

Gigs? Right now?

Probably the most condescending post someone has ever sent me.

Like I don't have gigs to play? Well, no one does at the moment. How many people here have a Noble? At $1200 a pop? Maybe 30? How many people here have an oracle? Again maybe 30. A reddi? A BAE? You get my point.

But when there is a new pedal with a first run release of say 30 it's not worth discussing before you have deemed it so?

"Then we will have different discussion". Seriously.?

It's a brand new pedal, released yesterday! And your saying we can't discuss it? Because? You don't have one?

Pretty condescending in my book. I won't be around for the discussion. Enjoy your thread.

...You must be lucky...
See, that's part of the turn off on a new piece of gear for me. I don't mind rooting around in classifieds etc for hard to find used gear. Just don't care for the sense of entitlement that goes along with that particular thing with new gear. Like I also posted, I don't mind waiting a reasonable amount of time for a commissioned build. The sense of position on the wait list based on "specialness" just doesn't square with my DNA.

A waitlist would be nice, as opposed to the current method of throwing chum in the water at typically unannounced times and it's first come first served. I feel like the same 5 people wind up with all of the new Broughton stuff. Or maybe they're the only 5 who comment about it in the thread. But if there was a waitlist for something like a P15, it would probably be 200 people long. But at least you know you'd get one, eventually. He does what he does for a reason, I'm sure. His stuff is great, but it's frustratingly difficult to get ahold of. And because it always is and remains rare, there is not much in the way of used deals to be found, which is typically the only way I can afford to justify buying new gear. ("Hey honey. It's okay. I got a great deal. We can buy groceries next month.") But for the most part, when you see Broughton stuff used (the good, rare stuff, at least), it's just as much as it was new, give or take $10.

Nearly none of which was actually stated or implied in that post. Not my thread, obviously. Carry on.

Edit: Look, it's this simple. I personally don't have time to sit at my computer looking on the Broughton website every 5 minutes to get a chance at trying something that I don't even have any reviews for, and no idea how it might stack up to my Demeter. So, for me, this kind of product offering isn't real. Yes, the products will get out there. Sure I will read reviews. But, the bottom line is if I can't purchase one, then they don't exist for me. I hope you don't take offense at that.

I'm still playing at the moment 2 times a week with 1 TV broadcast. So there is some though not nearly as much. I don't think anyone is saying Broughton gear isn't fantastic in build and quality. However, for me I waited a year or so for a Messenger that has said forever "coming soon". His coming soon isn't what I consider soon lol. Oh and I would about guarantee there are more Noble and Reddi owners and users than most of the broughton comparable DI's, but again that is my opinion. I say to anyone out there, enjoy whatever gear does it for you, as that is what makes America so good.
