They may be original, but I do not like the sure grip knobs as for indication. I've allways replaced them. Will do also with the fretless.
I even also do have some brown ones somewhere. Didn't know they sell for so much!? :eek:

My two black RS824's also play way different.
The one on top has a more solid feel to it, weighs slightly more (?) and has a bigger output than the bottom one.
But both have the same neck profile, though.

Don't do it! I want a maple board fretless Roadster, too. But it has to be unlined. It's the only way.

If you must make a fretless of one, buy a new neck and put the original aside.

There you go, then. Hnz does not like the original knobs, and would be more than happy to send his old ones your way. ;) Even from his brand "new" fretless (the bastard!!) Roadster. :p

You bugger... I bet it does.

But at least all of my Ibanez basses have their original SG knobs. And that includes my heavenly sounding (and dreamy-playing, and one-owner) '82 Musician MC-940. :D

(But to go along with my ebony board Musician and rosewood board Vantage VA900B/FL, I would love a maple board Roadster. Keep me in mind if you ever want to sell her.)

No argument. If it's done well, it will play just fine. But I've always been a fan of the blank plank. And I wouldn't mind a maple one at this point.

(Funny thing is, it's never been a major point for me when purchasing a new bass, but none of my current 10 basses have a maple board, and only one of the other two other basses I've previously owned had a maple board -- and it was an early '80s Blazer -- and I wish I still had it!)

It can be done!

I defretted a '86 Roadstar2...

Know how to do it, what the risks are and how to avoid them. Take your time, do it precise and be patient.
I used maple veneer to fill the fret slots.

@Alex: When, IF I consider selling the fretless Roadster, I'll keep you in mind! ;)

My Roadster was bought from a rack of used guitars at the local dealer. It was already horribly defretted (I didn't realize how bad it was until I got it home). But I liked the sound at the store when I tried it.

I had to saw the fret slots clean (they turned out to be filled with some kind of putty). The neck was all maple, and after some examination I decided to go for playability first and hope for the looks. I filled the slots with birch veneer and super glue.

The looks didn't turn out so well. I decided the term fraankenfretless suited it. But it is heavy and playable. Great sustain.
