Here's my two. I have best of both worlds; A neck through 5 and bolt-on 6. Now for some pics:

Any of you guys use effects with your Smiths? I am looking to pick up a used KS eventually, and I'm in a pop/rock/funk cover band, which I use some OD, and filters here and there. Just wondering how it would sound with that unique tone.
I got into effects after my 'Ken Smith period': I bought a high end 6 string one when in the last years of conservatory and played that bass exclusively for a year or three. In 2005 I got a used Lakland 55-94 which I still use to this day for about every gig I do.
Since then I also got into effects more and more up to the point where I have a *very* populated PTPro with 12-loop switcher and all. Off course all those effects are set up for the beefier and rawer Lakland but nevertheless I found the KS too clean or thin for most effect use.

Distortion/fuzz on such a piano-like fullrange sound is awkward, wah and filter sounds are ok.
Delays, reverbs, some dynamic control and a little modulation can be really nice but it depends on the context. If you're playing a bass recital it's all possible but in a full band the bass by itself is demanding a lot of (frequency) real estate let alone that you throw some effects on it.

... but to each his own.

Still love that bass though. Taught me *a lot* about harmony and melody. The playability is incredible - I did a lot of 5hour gigs in those days and never got tired. My fingers still automatically go in overdrive when I pick it up once in a while but the kind of gigs I do now don't require that much virtuosity.

I have a quick question maybe someone may be able to help me with. The quick connect wiring on the smith pickups, is that a standard plug that can be purchased easily or is it Ken smith specific?
thanks in advance

Can you post a photo?

Connectors like the black one shown here?: Invalid Link Removed

You can probably get them from someone like Mouser Electronics Invalid Link Removed

I really wanted a classic shaped Ken Smith. The first time I saw the Anthony
Jackson contrabass on Lee Ritenour's On The Line Album years ago, I always
wanted one. Those low B rumblings really made an impression on me. Plus it
was different and not like every Fender Jazz and P Bass out there.

The BSR has taken a while to grow on me. Plus I kind of wished the larger
headstock was still made with the tuning machines straight on rather than
angled a la Warwick.
