Seems like natural/maple M4V is flavor-of-the-month! Such a classic look- cant go wrong with it. I actually just asked George and Chris at Bass Sam Diego to order me a tort guard for my new Lull just to change it up from time to time. Enjoy the bass!

Definitely. Here's mine, great bass on every level and very versatile. It's got the usual bass/treble, vol-pan, but it also has active/passive mode and a passive tone control as well as a 250Hz mid control. Everything I could ever need on a J and a lot more. Ironically, I use its features, but not as often as I just pretty much play it straight up.

I have had it for 6 or 7 months. Bass Northwest in Seattle seems to keep one of these on order all the time. I just managed to intercept it before it made the trip. It is a sweet bass in the hands of a good player. I'm still working on not horrible .

Thanks! You should hear the B string on this bass... it's what sold me. I bought it at NAMM... couldn't leave it behind.

No! 34" scale. The whole 35/34 thing has been often covered here, and IMHO/IME, while it is easier to get a great B with a longer scale, it's not at all necessary with quality instrument building. It's more about construction and wood selection than anything else. Almost all my 5's are 34" scale now and all their Bs kill. It's a requirement of mine.

Hhhmmm... Ash body?? My alder body 34" came out with a weak B string. Talked to Mike yesterday and he's sending me a brass bridge to swap out to help the B. Hope it helps. Let me know your specs. Love the bass but am a little pissed about the B. Mine is alder body, maple board.

Yes, ash/maple. How heavy is your bass?

I will tell you a denser bridge will help with compression, sustain, and focus, removing some of the natural dampening of the wood (which also translates to what people refer to as "punch")... this is why they became so popular even back in the 70's, back before low B strings were really very prevalent on basses.

It's a balancing act between the dynamic punch of a bass, which is about the attack, but also initial decay, vs compression, which translates to sustain, focus, and tonal purity. You want dynamics of course, but not so much that that's all you have... unless of course all you do is like thumb mute work.

I realize I'm speaking extreme cases here, but that's to illustrate the core points.

If you have a fairly non-dense wood, then the wood is going to get a lot more involved in the dynamic component, and sometimes, compensating with a dense coupling (bridge) balances it out nicely by providing some isolation from the wood's involvement.

If you have a fairly dense wood (like a 11-12 pound bass, for example), the wood won't be as invasive to the string vibration, so you want a coupling that's more transparent and involves the wood more, as opposed to isolating the strings from it.

Vic - is your M5V chambered? I'm curious about how many of them are. Mine is chambered, light (though not as light as most chambered Sadowskys) and sounds fantastic. It's a very balanced bass from string to string - including the B (which couldn't sound better). Love it.

No, it's solid ash, which is also my preference. IMHO chambering does sort of add to the punch factor, and I generally lean towards the compression side, so I go for lighter ash, but a solid piece... that remains easy on my back for stage activities, but still gets me a nice tight sound. Both of my other ash bodied J's from another builder are solid ash.
