Actually nothing directly related, i.e. another jazz style. I have closet full of old bases rarely used I tested back to back first, just to get my ear to open a bit before I tried new stuff. Yamaha BB, Ibanez RD828LE, Rick 4001, American P bass. Then I went to GC and played a bunch of new stuff, mostly Music Man because I thought I wanted one - looking for the perfect small nut and 34-scale - but now not sure their sound is for me. I should get a MV5-34 on order.

Just a heads up...To quote Mike for a moment "the B on the 34" scales sound like its a coming from another instrument"....The don't sound the same so try one first if you can.

I just got a PJ4 Saturday...and I am thinking about selling it already! It is too close to my V4 jazz! I tried some TI flats and I didnt like them on there...oddly I liked the feel and didnt like the sound! I never thought I would say that about TIs! Lulls are like made for rounds! The PJ gets a tad fuller when you go towrds the P pickup a tad....but they are so close in feel and sound to each other its kinda like having 2 of the same bass! It was 2550 on bass san diego...think I can get 2100 me only having it for 4 days? I might try just a P4 without the jazz pup and a P neck.

If you like how it plays then you might want to just consider different pickups. To get that different vibe.
Try a set a Nordstrand PJ's with a dual coil J in the back (it will be a little darker then a single) guarantee it will sound a bit different.

Last night I was rocking my 5 string J. It's not the heaviest bass in the world but it's not the lightest either. My shoulder was starting to get a little sore after 90 minutes or so. When my band leader told us we were not taking a break and just going through to the end I switched over to my M4V. It felt like a toy in comparison because it was so light (and the smaller body, as well as missing a string). I haven't put it on a scale but I'm guessing it's got to be in the high 7 lb range.

It's just an outstanding bass.

The B on my Lull P5 (35") is tremendous. I wonder if there is really that much difference with the 34"??

Not in my experience. and I've owned both 35" and 34" Lull fivers. It's slightly floppier, but not that impedes play in the least.

I can't really compare 35" vs 34" B strings, as I've only sought out 34s---having a 35" scale bass, is a non-starter for me. This has posed great difficulty in "demo-ing" many basses! That said, (imo) the B string fits VERY nicely on Lull 34s. I have played a 34" Lull with the Aguilar OBP-3, and now this Bart NTMB...extremely different pre's, but I really like the B strings on both! (prefer the Bart pre though, for tone reasons )

I really like my Am Deluxe Jazz very much for a number of gigs. It's a nice, classic Fender Jazz feeling/sounding instrument (of course), and besides the classic Jazz thing, will do a very nice impression of a P when I need that flavor. But when I switch off from the Fender to my M4V, there is such a difference in feel, effortless playability and tone. Just a great instrument to have in your hands.
