my P4 that is thicker then my V4 is a couple weeks old.....the V4 was made in march.

*shrug* If that's the case, they should be making obvious notes on their site about the changes. Neck dimension is a big deal IMO.
That being said, I've never played a 4 string Lull that I wasn't happy playing - just minor preferences. But hey, if you're shelling out $3k for a bass, you care about details!
yeah I even asked...it was so noticable.....I asked if there were different profiles you could order...and was told no. It still plays fantastic!! but it is different!

Howdy back! Yes indeed you are correct, our necks have slightly changed over the years however not in quite some time. Also when we build basses now occasionally we shave a neck specifically for the individual.

Well, not to me I'm afraid. If I order a new Lull because I like the one I have, I would expect and want the neck to be the same.
i asked Mike the other day when i was at the shop if he can do custom neck profiles, and he said yes. he just said that he would have to take some measurements and give them to his CNC guy. i asked about an upcharge for this and he said it would be little to none.

as far as the build process goes with Mike, from what I've seen the various times I've been in the shop.
Mike and his crew do repair work throughout the week and Saturday is Mike's "build day". he has a storage area next door to his main shop for necks/bodies, as well as his bands small rehearsal space. Once Mike gets the body/neck and gets to the order, he can have a bass completely built in a matter of a couple hours.
Your description is telling me that Mike doesn't actually make the bass, doesn't actually cut any wood. Instead, the parts are made elsewhere, by others and he puts it together. Is this correct?
yes. he, along with builders like Sadowsky and Lakland do it that way as well. he has a vendor who CNCs the necks/bodies, they are them shipped to him for inspection so they meet his requirements, then are sent to one of multiple vendors to be finished, he gets them back and they are put in his storage area until they are ready to be built/assembled.
That does explain why they are so reasonably priced I guess. In the UK to order an equivalent spec Nordy would cost around £1000 more than a Lull. I for one certainly cannot justify the price difference just to get a bass that is built totally in house when there is little discernible difference in quality.
speaking to Mike, he explains the multiple reasons for doing things this way.
1. it's far less time consuming than it would be, and allows him to get orders finished quicker.
2. it ensures a more consistant product.
3. it allows him to focus on the fit/setup of the instrument.

And..... A bass that is basically a Fender type P or J is not about beautifully exotic woods, the exotic wood tones and combinations there of. The idea behind Lull, Sadowsky ect is building a better mousetrap..... Or a booteek mousetrap if you will. So the hand crafted aspect of the bodies and necks is not the focal point of these basses. It is using quality parts, great combinations of electronics and superior setups and playability.
