man, the N/RW game is exciting...the home team leads after 1 but lots more to come...:D

Darn for Detroit. Time for the "will Lidstrom come back?" talk to begin.

Fleury deserves all three stars for tonights game. The Flyers came at him hard core the last 13 minutes of that game. I couldn't sit down.

Yep it was a good game, with a few missed calls that were typical for the home team. But nothing that should have effected the outcome. Good teams can win on the road in the playoffs, the Detroit team that finished the season wasn't a good team.

Detroit, because of the cap and low picks in the draft works a system that really depends on depth. With a few exceptions we don't beat you because our stars are better than your stars, Detroit always won because its fourth line and third set of defenseman contributed. Well with the injuries this year towards the end of the season, the third and fourth line became the Grand Rapids Griffins. Helm never came back, Cleary needs knee surgery, and Franzen wasn't recovered at all.

Detroit was playing the best Hockey in the league for the first two thirds of the season. But in the last month they lost 9 key players to injury including Howard, Datsyuk and Lidstrom, arguably 3 of their best four players. But it wasn't the injuries to those guys that killed them (although I'm not sure Howard was 100%), it was the injuries to the depth guys like Ericcson, Kindle, Eaves, Cleary and Helm. Those are the guys that keep the "stars" from having to play 25 minutes a night. With them out Detroit became a pretty ordinary team.

Sadly, I think its time to blow it up. If Lidstom wants to come back cheap, cool. But they should look at trading pretty much anyone else but Howard and Datsyuk, including Zetteberg. They also have some cap space and need to look for a number one defenseman. Ian White was a nice pickup but not a clear number two (sadly he was injured too in the playoffs) like Rafalski was. Injuries have derailed the last three seasons in the playoffs, its time to realize the system is not built for the playoffs without some new younger talent.

Nashville was a step quicker to almost every lose puck in this series. The Detroit announcers kept claiming that Nashville was getting all the "lucky bounces" with the puck. Well while I'll agree that especially in game one Nashville got all the fluke goals, the fact of the matter is, they were there. And the Wings weren't, Franzen has no acceleration, White, and Cleary were laboring. The injuries hurt, but I think they hurt because they were an less talented team that was half a step slow anyway, and the injuries magnified the problem.

And to Nashville, good luck, you guys are the team I most feared going into this thing. I'll be rooting for you the rest of the way.
