By XL I was aiming for a chunkier "full hollow style" body actually! One can always dream. Good to hear some more examples though. It is a cool bass.
Meanwhile I'm still awaiting my Elwood - I might go pick it up in person so I can try out some other instruments too.

I just bought a used Maruszczyk Elwood. It came terribly setup. I boiled some old strings and sat it up properly. And here I come with a 5 minute demo. It sounds terrific and it's comfy as always. Enjoy!
Curious about how you would characterize the neck shape on a 5'er (thinking fretless Jake). More towards the "thin/fast" or "beefy" front-to back?
The neck of my Elwood (no longer have it) was more towards "beefy", but definitely no baseball bat. It felt comfortable to me.

I just got this beautiful Cazpar the other day. Wow, what a bass. It's the first short scale 5-string I've heard/played that has a B string which actually sounds good (really good, actually). I think this is the perfect short scale 5-string. The pickup and electronics are great. Plays as good as or better than any other short scale bass I have or have had (I've had many). Looks fabulous. Construction is top notch. Balances better than the typical short scale bass. Very impressive in all regards. And it is a blast to play. And it is different enough looking to get "What is that?" comments. Love the "tie dye" effect on the burl. I'll be getting a companion 4-string version of this bass in the near future, I'm sure...

I've been hooked on the configurator for a few months, but it's hard to pull the trigger, because I haven't had one of these basses in my hands.
They look and sound great! My question is, how well do they play? - not compared to an off the shelf bass in guitar center, but compared to a really nice handmade instrument...are they that nice?
I'm expecting too much for such a small price tag?

I have owned two (I still own one, I sold my 5-string headless Frog to @Barticus because I just didn't see the need to own two 5-strings when I was using none), and I found both to play quite nice, even out of the box. As far as I know Adrian personally inspects and sets up all the basses before they leave, and I have had absolutely no complaints about the craftsmanship and work on them.

The build quality is really good, playability is really good, the necks are thin and smooth and the electronics sound great (Delano in my case). It also has a zero nut which allows for low action.
I’m not sure what you’re comparing it to though... I own 6 Warwicks and a Skjold (none of which are cheap basses)... and a Fender, Sire and a few more.
I feel that the Frog fits right into my arsenal and I certainly don’t think you’ll be disappointed
Mine plays like a dream. I have several really high-end pricey basses (Spectors) and they are great basses, but this Mensinger holds its own against all of them. Build quality is very good. The bass just feels great. Of course, we are all physically different, but the neck just fits my hand perfectly (and my hands are quite small).

It is difficult to know what you consider to be "nice" and what your expectations are.
I have owned three Maruszczyk basses (still own two) and can tell you the following.
- Craftsmanship is very good to excellent.
- Their own hardware is solid.
- They also use pickups and hardware made by top notch manufacturers (e.g. Delano, Häussel, Aguilar, Hipshot etc.)
- Your options are endless. You can get nearly everything except for a custom body shape.
- The maple used for my basses appears to be of good quality, growth is straight and even.
- The necks feel very steady and solid. Contrary to @Barticus, I do not find them thin. It was discussed a few pages back that Maruszczyk always uses a "modern C" shape unless you request something else. My Frog and my Mr Tee have a similar neck profile and to me, it feels more like a p bass shape, although certainly not the baseball bat type.
Summing up, you can get a very (to me!) "nice" bass for the price of an MIA Fender, although the price can get considerably higher depending on model and choice of options.
Sadly however, resale prices are not particularly favorable.
I would say mine plays great, but it's such a personal thing. I have a Jake and I would take it over any Fender P I've tried, including some Custom Shop basses. The build quality was impressive. I could not find a single imperfection of any kind. The J-width Modern C neck felt right at home after years of playing similar Fender necks. I like my action low, but not crazy low, and have no problem dialing that in.
I'm really glad I found out about Maruszczyk and will be ordering another sooner or later.
