One thing I don't understand is why 99% of the 4 strings are 40mm. (elwood, since it's a "jazz" take)
38mm 4, 45mm 5. That seems like the most logical choice. Maybe someone could enlighten me?

40mm is the default option. You can get 38mm if that is what you feel suits you best by placing an order. Honestly, I've never really given much thought to that sort of thing before the past few weeks. My Elwood 4 is 40mm and I dig it.....
Been wondering about that, myself. I'm drooling over some of these basses but I really would prefer the 38mm nut. Does anyone know if he'll create the neck profile to spec as well? I really love the feel of my Music Man Sterling H4, which has a D profile and a much flatter radius than my Jazz.
38mm = original Jazz bass, 42 / 44mm = original P bass... -> 40mm = in-between.
"Make them all happy with just one in-between neck", this is what all builders want to do to avoid making 2 different necks for their 4-string basses and optimize production. But instead they could end up in making no one happy? don't know, lol
If you go to the public peace website and use their search function "38mm" you'll find several models. I think some were in stock, all could be backordered. And if you order something specifically made for you then 38mm isn't an issue at all.
As for neck profile, I asked Adrian while I was ordering my Jake what kind of neck profile it has, he replied "standard modern C, only very few people actually want the thicker P-style necks" so I'm pretty sure they also do other neck profiles if you ask for it.

I realize I could order one that way, and I might. But as mentioned by another, everything "in stock" seems to be 40, I just thought it was weird, not that they offer that, but it seems to be their standard.
I have very small hands/fingers, 38/45 seem to be perfect for me, but I can play a P bass.

Yep, it's THEIR standard and I would assume that they reached a decision to use 40mm by default based on feedback from customers. 40mm nut, 14" fretboard radius, 19mm string spacing at the bridge......... That's how they choose to make them unless told otherwise. Not weird to me. It's just a Maruszczyk thing....
I asked for a 1.75” nut and compound radius, but said if compound is not an option to use a 12” radius (like my Sadowsky). I’m not sure they gave me what I asked for...it seems pretty flat as though it might be 14” but I haven’t measured it. It’s okay though, I’m getting used to it.
If you asked for something specifically, they agreed to it, then didn't deliver.... That's totally different than what my previous post was about.
I also asked for graphite rods. No mention of them in the paperwork and no way to tell if they are in there.
@DaveAceofBass , that's still very different than what I was talking about in the original post of mine that you quoted. Let me clear this up, hopefully. The person I was responding to seemed to feel it was "weird" that Maruszczyk didn't produce more instruments with 38mm nut widths by default. I was simply stating that Maruszczyk appears to have reached a decision that 40mm would be their standard. Therefore, more instruments with 40mm nuts are being produced.
Why this became an issue of you feeling the need to gripe to me about things that you feel Maruszczyk DID NOT do is beyond me! That's between you and Maruszczyk and I'm not their representative. If you aren't satisfied, maybe that is who you need to be addressing your concerns with. That's how I would handle it....
I'm curious. At what point did your bass stop being "freaking awesome" and "exactly how you wanted it"?

There's not one thing about this bass that I hate. The Maruszczyk pickups that it has are probably not the flavor that I would choose for my main instrument but they do have nice tone. The 2-band Delano in it is also cool but a 3-band is going to be more suitable to me. Regarding the feel, quality of construction and appearance? Love those attributes......
