The Official MTD USA Thread

Obligatory post - how about these colour schemes for a custom order? Hehehehe.

Just yum. That looks an awful lot like the one I'm waiting for...and can't wait to play.

Nice 635/24 that's a picture I took, I originally bought the bass from Adrian, after he had it a month, I loved the bass, tone, and Crouch Walnut
makes one drool, but I opted out for another 5er, I plan on getting another 535 with that wood combination in the not to distant future.

Enjoy it!

Hi guys,

I've just read in previous posts some of you are using the .130 gauge for your B string on your 535.

Nut on 535s is cut for .135 gauge, which is wider than 130.

Your .130 B string is still well guided by the nut cut for .135? Or some of you have noticed that string can move from side to side inside the hole of the nut?

I'd like to try smaller gauge for my low B, but I've seen it didn't work on all basses. Your advice?

Thanks for your help.

Anyway these basses are fantastic. I own a 535 and I'm very satisfied!

The kickback on the headstock puts enough downforce on the zero fret and "nut" (really more of a string guide on these due to the BFTS/zero fret) that this should not be a problem. It never has been for me, and I've even used .125's on mine.

Thanks Vic.
So you're actually playing with a .130 B string and no problem at all? No need to fit a new nut?
How many loops on the B string tuner have you to provide the right angle to the B string to have enough downforce?

Another question:
Have some of you tried larger gauges to tune their MTDs in a lower range? (For example: ADGEF, or lower, instead of BEADG)

Thanks Vic.

Yep. I've gone from 125-135 no problem.

On the string loops, I always, regardless of bass design, try to have at least two loops, but try not to have more than 3-4. With the kickback, you really only need the minimum (1-2, but 2 makes me personally feel better), because the kickback gives you all the force you need. With other basses, especially if they don't have trees, it's more of a consideration, but IMHO, not on an MTD.

Looking stunning guys!

I used to dream of owning an MTD for years. I managed to try some out at a get together through a great rig. Alas, it didn't quite do it for me. Playability was great, sound was exactly what I'd heard on recordings, but it just didn't 'fit' me or 'speak' to me as I'd perhaps hoped.

Oh well. Either way, MTD's are serious basses. Let's keep the pics coming. Anyone got any new builds under way?

Here’s a pic of the top wood I chose and teaser pic of the back of a purple burst 735 I should receive any day. The clear wasn’t applied yet and the purple has been darkened since the photo. I've seen a couple of other photos since the final clear was added and it looks great. :D Last Thursday Mike said it should ship by tomorrow (Wednesday) and he would provide some final pics prior to shipping. It’s been along wait ... ordered it last October. Mike T. and Glenn K. (at ABT) have been absolutely wonderful to work with during this project!

I also recently picked this 635 thru neck up from ABT as well. Couldn't resist .... although it’s a little heavy ... it plays absolutely incredible. Slap tone is a ten plus!

Ok this one and the 735 makes four MTDs for me. :D I’m trying to catch so of you other nut cases! And, it’s official … I have lost my financial mind!!!! :help:

That is one killer MTD. It is probably the nicest MTD I've ever seen. I would love to hear some sound clips if thats possible. I would also love to see some more pics.
