The Official MTD USA Thread

That is one killer MTD. It is probably the nicest MTD I've ever seen. I would love to hear some sound clips if thats possible. I would also love to see some more pics.

The workmanship on that bass is really something. As with most custom basses ... the pics really don't do it justice. The body is made of 13 laminations across the body and 9 laminations front to back. Interesting enough the neck as a whole is about 1/8 wider than my other 635 bolt-ons? This is noticeable, but still comfortable for me. It’s really a nice bass, Mike puts a lot of effort into all his basses and customer satisfaction. The communication on my 735 build project has been great too. What I find amazing is how prompt Mike is to return e-mails. I will try and get some sound bites as soon as I can. Oh and no … I didn’t pay anything near $8500 for it:). Glenn took another bass I had in trade plus some cash. He is really great to work with also

That's the understatement of the year. :D Dude, that is a rare beauty for SURE. There are not many out there at all with that configuration and that high count of such especially "select" woods. You are indeed fortunate to have that piece!!

Glenn ... is really great to work with also
Big +1

Ok this one and the 735 makes four MTDs for me. :D I’m trying to catch some of you other nut cases! And, it’s official … I have lost my financial mind!!!! :help:
Dude, I'm SO SORRY. I know you're mostly talking about Tom, but I'm sure I contributed a little. I owe you a beer to cry into... (except... with all those MTDs it's damn hard to feel depressed... :D)...

Here’s a pic of the top wood I chose and teaser pic of the back of a purple burst 735 I should receive any day. The clear wasn’t applied yet and the purple has been darkened since the photo. I've seen a couple of other photos since the final clear was added and it looks great. :D Last Thursday Mike said it should ship by tomorrow (Wednesday) and he would provide some final pics prior to shipping. It’s been along wait ... ordered it last October. Mike T. and Glenn K. (at ABT) have been absolutely wonderful to work with during this project!

That's an awesome top wood and a really nice stain on the back. Is that poplar burl or something similar?

MTD's are one of the few basses that really work with a more matte finish. Often it looks cheap on other basses.

A 735? Wow, good choice! I love the sparkle and zing that MTDs with extended range achieve. Such a balanced instrument from top to bottom.

As much as I like those wood-capped basses, I'm just in love with my Rodman and similar combos.

I'm still undecided as to what my next Rodman will be... Maybe blue/green/blue or red/blue/red... who can say. :)

And I'll have a flamed maple top more than likely, so it'll be pretty darned striking!

Mike can do anything you want. Just give the specs and a couple of pics to reference colors and configurations and he'll make it happen. :hyper: I think the man enjoys a challenge. I discussed tone and style of playing with him and decided on a wood combination that fit what I was looking for. From there we discussed tops where he sent me several pics that fit what I was looking for (something a little abstract). I chose the one I did for that reason. The only thing I didn't pay attention to was the placement of the neck to the body. Most of the upper wood figuration (my favorite) was removed to insert the neck. The final task I had to accomplish was to determine a finish. This was very difficult. I love natural finishes, but I really wanted something a little different … some color and some natural. So, I spent the next couple of months feverishly searching the net for finishes for the purpose of providing Mike a color and type reference. Just last week he sent me a couple of pre-finish pics to review and we tweaked the color a bit. He has been great to work with!
If you’re sure you want a custom made MTD, I would place an order with someone soon. Most dealers have construction slots available with Mike. They will require a down payment, but (with ABT) this will get you a slot for construction. From there you will have some time to determine wood combinations, tops and finishes as the construction date get closer. Good Luck! Oh …. and it will take a while mine was about a year …. in one of the Youtube interviews … Mike says he has a year and half back log now. This depends upon who you order with. Some dealers have slots available sooner than others. It will also provide time to open a lemonade stand to raise the rest of the funds. I hate lemonade now! :eyebrow:

Seeing a lot of wenge/wenge neck & boards lately. My first three MTD's I owned all had that as a wood selection, until I experienced maple/roeswood & ash/maple neck and board. I am however considering another wenge/wenge, but the next time around I don't think I will have two MTD's with the same neck/board woods, but as I remember I liked the tone I got with those woods, however the ash body with ash/maple and tulip wood (poplar) maple/rosewood really has me hooked right now.

Is it possible for Mike to do retrofits on a neck?

Only reason I ask is, I LOVE my Rodman... Like, a friggin' bunch. I was looking to get another 535 in 24 frets b/c I kinda need it for what I play, but, I just am stickin' with this one for the most part.

It's a 21 w/ the matching headstock.

Is it too much work to even ask, or even worth it?

If you're talking about putting a 24 fret neck on a 21 fret bass, I don't think that'll work. I'm pretty sure the body shape is different. I think the 24 fret is a shorter body, which is why the battery cover interferes with the elex cover on that model (but doesn't on the 21 fret model).

Ok then.

Another project solved before it even got started! :)
