The Official MTD USA Thread

Dude, I remember that bass! That was killer. If I had the money at the time, it very likely would have been mine. I little more on the Fendery side of the MTD sound, a really nice neck profile, and just friggin' awesome in a mix. If you ever decide to flip it, you know who to PM first (but please wait a LONG time before you even consider it, or even better yet, just keep it forever, 'cause I'm broke again). :D

Hey man, thanks for the MTD props. I really like #746 for the very same reason -- it's got a Jazz bass heart and soul, with Mike's added boom/sizzle. Always pops in the mix. Not planning to sell anytime soon!

Cameron,

I've never had an issue with my Kinal truss rods on either of the two that I've had so far. Just because you had an isolated bad experience doesn't give you the right to slam a decent luthier's work, who by the way is a friend and colleague of Mike Tobias. You should do a Google search on Kinal basses, and tell me if all the reviews on Harmony Central are wrong.

There are some sweet MTDs in this thread. I wish they weren't all 35" scales.

Just for the record, I've owned three Kinals, from as far back as 1984, a four string, a five string fretless, and a 6 string fretted, and students bought another four or five, friends and colleagues lots more, so I am completely conversant in his work, thanks. Many had electronic issues, fret issues, several had truss rod issues, one of my students had a really nasty issue with a piezo preamp incorrectly installed without a buffer preamp that he refused to deal with (should have been a warranty issue, as HE had wired the thing totally wrong, he screamed at my student, lawsuits were threatened, and Bill Bartolini himself finally had to get involved), and I personally won't be buying or recommending them any more.

Cheers,
Cameron

the problem ratio on those basses is totally whacked out - +50%.

Never again.

And the last one I owned weigh about 15 lbs...

:rollno:

Cheers,
Cameron

That being said, you might look up all the other people on here who have experiences with Kinal basses. Cameron seems to be the only one who has had these major issues. Lokire, myself, and many others love their Kinal basses, and Harmony Central has nothing but positive reviews. Chris Tarry also likes Kinal basses. Anything handmade can have minor problems, like Mike Tobias said, there's always changes and variables for each order.

How does slamming decent luthiers on TB benefit anyone in the bass community? It's kind of like the time I was at a church and the pastor started talking dirt on another church that I had also been to before. Not only did it do absolutely nothing positive for their congregation, but it left me with a bad taste in my mouth and wound up going back to the old church and ignoring all the negativity that I personally knew was untrue anyway.

When you hear all this negative talk, don't buy it, play a Kinal bass and make your own decision. You can thank me later.

Didn't mean to sabotage the MTD thread, I love MTDs. I just can't wait 2 years and pay $5000, or wait to find a used 34" scale MTD.

Actually, I find this sort of feedback very useful. I WANT to know if people have had problems with a particular luthier's work. It's not simply a matter of negativity if the facts are legitimate.

By the way, the current wait period for a 535 is 8 to 10 months, and if you don't go with a fancy top... ;)

sorry if this has been posted before, but this is just ridiculous...

The statements made by Cameron are not legitimate, they are biased.

I wasn't slamming Kinal, just making a comment on the problem one of mine had.

Just for the record, Chris Tarry doesn't and hasn't played his Kinal for years - he plays a 5 string Fodera. And my negative talk was a direct result of this luthier screaming at me and my student, denying ANYTHING was wrong with the bass, and we finally had to get Mike Lull to do a repair job on it that was over $500.00. And my students and I had bought over 10 basses off the guy, you'd think he'd back up his stuff. I personally had spent about $10,000.00 with him.

:scowl:

Bad customer service second only to the Eden corporation.

Lovely. I've got TWO pictures of me with Mr. Tobias from the NAMM shows - does that mean I'm a colleague? And I just noticed a little 'for sale' sign at the bottom of your posts:

Kinal MK5-B for sale

and you're calling ME biased? I'm just trying to inform people about my experiences with Kinal basses. And I didn't start a bashing thread; I was mentioning how easy my MTD's were to adjust compared to the Pedulla and Kinals I had owned. Then you showed up.

And BTW, my first Kinal, a headless (it WAS the 80's) had a truss rod that stopped about 4" from the end of the neck, so it gradually turned into a nice grass hockey stick, unable to be adjusted; my second, a 5 string fretless 1995, a 7 ply neck through, had one truss rod surrounded by two graphite strips - the truss rod did NOTHING, but fortunately it was an unlined fretless, so you could plane the fingerboard to get the relief you needed; and my third and LAST one, a six string fretted from 1996, I asked him for TWO truss rods in the fingerboard - I assumed he would put one on each side of the very wide neck (19mm spacing), so you could adjust the C string side and the B string side somewhat independently, so what did he do? He ran BOTH truss rods RIGHT UP THE MIDDLE OF THE FINGERBOARD, side by side, within 1/2" of each other, with a graphite strip on each side AND one sandwiched between the truss rods. Stable - you bet - 9 ply bubinga and wenge neck, Pau Ferro fingerboard, so solid you could probably jack your car up with it. Unfortunately, the fret job was awful, and you couldn't adjust the neck at ALL, not .00000001", in any direction. You were stuck with the stock settings, period, which were sort of medium high heavy action, not at all what I wanted. Talk about useless.

Don't even TALK to me about wiring issues....

My last words on Kinal basses. My blood pressure goes through the roof at the mere mention of them...

Good luck with your sale. How's the truss rod working for you? Electronics?

:rollno:

Cheers,
Cameron

Good luck with your sale. How's the truss rod working for you? Electronics?

As far as the MK5-B I have for sale, I'm selling it only to help fund another one I'm having custom made. I got it on a trade, and it is not to my spec. I've never had any issues with the electronics on that particular bass, and the truss rod is the best and by far easiest to adjust of any bass I've ever owned or played. The only issue is that the nut is too low, which happened after I requested my tech keep lowering it, so it was my fault, and it can be easily corrected.

As for your experiences, Kinal does not make headless basses anymore, and the 80s were 20 + years ago. You'd think his skills might have improved since then. As for the neck thru fretless, Kinal recently built me a DK5 neck thru and the truss rod works fine. The only wiring issue I had was a phase problem with the mag pickups, something that was not so easy to find due to the coil tap switch. Sounds like your dual truss rods in the 6 string were a custom request and something that Kinal was not used to building.

If you don't intend to luthier-bash, then stop re-posting comments on Kinal basses. I've seen your comments in other threads, and it is best to leave it alone. After all, you can see that many other TBers own Kinals and love them.

And again I'm sorry for any sabotaging of the MTD thread. MTD basses are gorgeous, and if I could get a custom 534 in my price range I would.

I'd like to kindly request you guys take the Kinal issue into PMs please. :(

and I have personally avoided ALL Kinal threads since joining Talkbass out of respect for the owners of those instruments because I knew I had nothing good to say about the man or his instruments, with which I had many long and painful dealings. This was NOT a Kinal thread; I have PM'd Ace Of Bass, and I won't clutter up this thread with this ** if he will stay out of my face about the subject. When I'm personally attacked like that, I have a right to defend myself; I initially stated quite politely that my MTD's were easier to adjust than my Pedulla or my Kinal, and was immediately attacked personally by a guy with a Kinal for sale (strange that no Pedulla owners attacked me)...

And, just for the record, I have played several of his instruments that are less than 5 years old, and nothing has changed. He would not do warranty work on ANY of the basses I owned, aside from a little fret dressing, and they all needed MAJOR structural repairs. I no longer have any vested interest in any of this, I'm not selling anything, just relating a small portion of my experiences with Mr. Kinal and his basses, and this is my last word on that subject.

And to the moderators, sorry about all this, hate to add to your workload, and I personally wouldn't mind if you deleted all of this crud from this MTD thread after a day or so so that some readers have had a chance to read my defence against this latest attack.

Sincerely,
Cameron
