The Official MTD USA Thread

No, but I could be sellin' it... :)

AAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!

It is one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to deal with. Still not sure I can do it, but I'll definitely post up here in advance of a for sale ad if I do. Club threads always get first shot at my primo stuff.

Trust me, that could very well be the outcome. It just kinda' hurts to know this amazing instrument isn't getting much air time, and that's probably not gonna' change in my hands. We'll see.

I have a love, hate relationship with my Marilyn...sometimes the 'soft' mids really bug me, wish it had more, miss the 'Jaco' sound somewhat, and the slightly 'hollow' sounds starts to get me as well...but then I put some fresh strings on it, go to a music store and A/B it with pretty much anything else, and I realize that it annihilates just about everything out there...dynamic range is out of this world...it's just ME getting jaded.

Keep that bass, man, you're nuts!

Cheers,
Cameron

Well, yours is also I think different from mine. Mine has good even mids... just more low end extension, and it's more "reactive", mainly.

Hey all,

I've played MTD's for quite a while now, currently a 635-24 Ash/Walnut/Ash that I absolutely love. I've always used MTD strings, but I'm in the mood to experiment.

Those of you who are using something other than MTD strings, what are you using and what do you like about them? Or have you tried other strings and come back to the MTDs?

-Alan

I've moved away from steel strings on my MTDs just to tame the top end a little.
When I got my Marilyn 535 it was strung with MTD SS strings and they were super bright. I was recommended Fodera nickels, so tried them, and they seem really good. I've been told they last a long time too, so hopefully that'll work out.
MTD nickel strings have worked out well on my ash/maple 535.

update - I took off the Fodera Diamond Series nickels and replaced them with MTD nickels. The MTD set don't sound as dark as the Fodera set, which seemed to be missing a mid-range bite that I like. The MTD set are a lot warmer than the MTD steels that came with the bass, but still aren't overly dark sounding. I think a good option if anyone wants to tame the highs on their MTDs :D
Also, I think the tapered B string on the MTD set makes the B more defined too.

I might put the MTD steel B string on with the nickel set, and see how that sounds, as the B string is a bit dark sounding.

To sum up, I think the MTD nickels might be the best string I've had on my MTDs to date...
