I hate to interrupt the beautiful basses in the previous posts but I wanted to post my quickly shot group photo.

Left to right:

• Peterbuilt (NL partsbass maker) jazz with CS 60 pu's,
• Very light fretless PJ parts-bass with passive EMGs and wenge/urethane fretboard, was somebody's project, no idea about the body wood..,
• Yamaha TRB5-I,
• MetroExpress (with Gregory preamp - all bells & whistles version),
• Fenderized HB 50s P.

A lot has been written and said about these basses (except the fretless) and I can usually just confirm what people have said. I play the fretted ones in my bands (salsa, latin jazz, covers), and the fretless only at home.

Missing here are the plywood upright and the Blady babybass, currently in my profile pic. The case in the back contains a very nice Flamenca negra.

It's been a bit since I posted in here, and a LOT has changed since my first post... Forgive the CRAP iPhone pics and sub optimal lighting...

2021 Fender Player Precision Bass. This was my main gig bass for a few years
1994 MIM Jazz with a 2022 (I think) Squier Precision neck. I've owned this one the longest, now it collects dust until I need that Jazz tone...
2023 Squier CV Jaguar medium scale. This bass is a God send when my stupid arthritis is bugging me.
2023 Yamaha TRBX605FM Natural. This one and the Indigo blue one were my main basses until recently (no band )
2024 Yamaha TRBX605FM Indigo Blue.
2025 Cort Artisan Space 5. I needed/wanted a headless, and I LOVE this thing.
2025 Squier Telecaster FMT SH. For when I'm feeling like playing something with skinny strings.

Well, after 21 years of bass playing (late bloomer), owning 58 different basses over that time (most at any one time was 9), staring down retirement from the day-job in just under three weeks, and having not purchased a bass for over a year, it certainly seems these will be the FINAL eight. Can't imagine adding or selling.

Gretsch5440LSB: Huge, awkward to play, neck dive like crazy - and the most beautiful woody hollowbody tone I've ever heard.

G&L Kiloton Tribute Fretless: I've owned a few Fender Jazz Fretless basses over the years, but the big G&L ceramic pickup really brings out the mwah.

Fender Mustang PJ: Fender CS'62 P and Fender G4 Noiseless Jazz pickups.

2005 Fender American Jazz: Previous owner got rid of the S1 switch, but must have also swapped out the pickups because as much as I love my Fender basses, I never keep the stock pickups (too muddy). The pickups in this bass are very articulate with lots of clarity. Unsure how to confirm what pickups they might be.

2007 Highway One Jazz: Diamond in the rough. Horrible fret condition and setup when I bought it. Negotiated based on its condition. Something was telling me to take the risk. It's now my #2 most gigged bass. Fender CS'60s pickups.

2011 Fender American Special: Shallow C neck (typical P nut width, but a but thinner front to back and slightly less round). Love those necks. This has been my #1 for a while now. Fender CS'62 pickup.

2011 Fender American Special: Find what you love ... and buy two! This might be my new #1. Fender CS'62 pickup, but recently added a Fender Gen4 Jazz pickup and TBX tone control. Very focused tight tone. Trims the fatty booms, very dynamic and open. Definitely my punchiest bass.

2011 Fender Precision Road Worn: I'm the third or fourth TB'er who has owned this bass. From Texas to Alberta to Toronto. The bass stays here! Lowest buzz free action I have ever enjoyed on a bass. Lightest bass I own too. Lots of authentic road wear from previous owners that just adds to its history and character!

I lied in terms of never making additional changes. The local availability of a long sought-after American Special Jazz in candy-apple red to complement my Precisions set me into motion. Downsized from eight to six in the process.

I took this today and thought……maybe things are getting outta hand. NINE is a lot. But you’ll notice, no two are alike. And the P is a Glarry. So that doesnt count, and the Uke is a novelty, so thats really not something to feel guilty about. And all the rest, well, I need em’…right? I do gig alot ( I have 2 on thursday, 6PM and 9 PM, and 6 more this month so…) Biggest challenge is picking which one ( or sometimes 2) gets to come to the gig. I have a trio where I use the fretless exclusively, and the Lakland, Sadowsky, and Warwick get rotated somewhat regularly. But the sadowsky sees the most daylight because its “Steinway like” clarity makes it quite wonderful in my IEM’s. Aaaah…choices.
