Here is a fretted four string I built in 2013 as I thought I would try playing fretted (I have always played fretless). Didn't work out for me so its been hanging on the wall. This has a one piece Macassar ebony neck through a sepele body and curly maple top. Bill Lawrence pickups carry the visual from the non inlaid ebony fingerboard. Its a striking bass with a huge clear sound and I may try fretted again.

Thank you. The design originated in 1983 and the first one designed was built in 1985. The shape works very well for bass and offers good ergonomics and on my ebony neck 5 string prevents neck dive. Starting a 6 string with ebony neck and I expect there will also be no neck dive as well.

Get the Czech Made Dean Jeff Berlin Signature Model with the offset machines. Do not get any other. There's a Korean version and a Chinese version. The Korean versions are decent, but lack the BAD ASS II Bridge and the Bartolini pups and the Schaller tuners.

The Chinese version is active but also lacks the BA II bridge, Schaller Tuners and Bart Pups....and Jeff Berlin would never endorse an active bass. These are on Amazon once in a while.

There is currently a Dean Patchwork version on GC used gear section for a very salty price, but it is the real deal.

Many sellers are pricing the lower quality non-Czech made Dean's at the same price and you'll be stuck with something inferior. Here is a pic of my Dean Czech made Jeff Berlin signature model. For a bolt on neck it has amazing sustain. There are later Czech made versions with tuning machines in line and parallel rather than offset.

Of course if you're talking about obtaining the Dean USA custom shop model that I think was made for 2013 (attached link) best of luck finding one. I've never actually seen the versions made in the Dean USA Florida shop.

Just be careful before buying. Jeff Berlin left Dean for a reason and although I can't speak for him I very much believe it is because they started making these out of lower quality materials in order to get a higher profit margin, though that is just my opinion. However, Dean seems to do that quite a bit on some of their nicer offerings over time. An example is changing Bart pups or EMG pups to their own versions, changing out BA II bridges to similar looking no name bridges, changing out machine tuners to no name Schaller looking or Grover looking versions, heavier use of basswood which granted, it is a lighter wood, but doesn't resonate well for a bass. It is less of a concern when basswood is used on either side of a neck through style bass.

This is a link to the Dean Jeff Berlin 'Player' bass made in China. It is active, and does not have Barts nor does it have a Badass II Bridge. It is in no way shape or form worth the asking price.

Left to right we have:

  • Warwick Dolphin Pro1 five string, 2005.
  • Zon Sonus 5 (with its awesome carbon neck), 1994.
  • Fender USA Marcus Miller signature V, 2004.
  • Rickenbacker 4001v63 (modded to sixties spec using nos electronics), I believe this is from 2001.
  • Rickenbacker 4003 with toaster pickup upgrade (less bite, more balls) at neck position, 2012.
  • Fender JAPAN seventies reissue Precision, with Fender custom shop pickup, I believe from 2014.

Here is my latest addition to my collection. It's a Dean Exotica Quilted Ash Acoustic-Electric Bass. It's not only lovely to behold with it's quilted Ash Top/Sides/Back, Bronze/Gold/Black celluloid binding, & Mahogany neck but it's a joy to play both electric and or acoustically. She is going to be my late night toy for when everyone else is asleep for the most part although I'm bringing her to my next acoustic guitar lesson as well as my next bass lesson. Yeah yeah I'll be showing off.... But she is and sounds so purty that I just gotta.

I have the same one, plus the Exotica Quilt Ash trans black fretless. Does your have the Aphex? I love 'em. Have 'em both out and ready all the time.

Yes it does have the Aphex..... I'm very surprised at and happy with the sounds that come from the Aphex switch.... Scared me the first time I flipped the toggle then made a quick deliberate thump on the E string. My Rumble 100 responded with a thundering boom that blew the cat's mind.
