If I buy a bass I want something considerably different out of it from the bunch. I have two Ps (only a few serials apart) but they're configured differently and I need them both for quick studio options. The olympic white P is my #1 studio bass. At home I play the two hollowbodies the most. I easily sound the worst on the fretless Stingray. I came from boutique basses but now I mostly prefer classic tones. I'm big on proper reissues as shown in the first three basses below.

'13 Hofner V64 500/1, Pyramid flats
'05 Rickenbacker 4001C64, TI flats
'10 Stingray fretless, TI flats, pau ferro fingerboard, swapped pickguard
'97 Fender P, TI flats, Fralin pickup, swapped pickguard, pickup and bridge cover plates
'97 Fender P, DR Sunbeams, SD SPB-1 pickup
'96 Fender J, D'Addario Flex Steels (despite the misleading reflection), SD Antiquity I pickups, swapped pickguard and knobs
When I play with a pick it's Dunlop Max-Grip 1.14s on the hollowbodies, what a combination! Much less frequently Dunlop Ultex triangle 0.88s on the Fenders. Most of the time I run every bass wide open. On the Starfire the neck solo'd can be nice as is the Hofner bridge solo'd.
Some upcoming mods for me are : tortoise guard on the blue P, Curtis Novak BiSonic pickups in my Starfire or perhaps route the blue P, 2band EQ in the Stingray.

Keith, the KB, as you can probably tell from the pic, is a fretless. It's semi-hollow with an arched body (kind of like a Warwick) and has piezos installed in the bridge. It's pretty versatile sounding, being able to blend the Bartolini/piezo pickups. Very nice mwah. I use it mostly for getting a very warm upright-like tone that is difficult to achieve on most solid bodies.

My new baby - Sandberg VM5 Custom (100% passive, no preamp, Delano pickups, satin finish, 2011). Bought from anonymous guy from Germany. It's beautiful and not very common, but I'm a really poor photographer with poor camera, so maybe it's not visible clearly... I've always been a huge fan of Fender USA & JP, but it's even better.

Alot of the times, I find 5 string P's and J's very disproportionate. This one hower is really pleasing to the eye. Nice bass.

Here's a bass I built out of spare parts last year that my son uses in the worship band at church....my son calls it the "Iron Man" bass.....I like the name as the tone of this bass definitely fits the name
my collection as of late June 2014, Just bought an 88' Steinberger XP-2 from a local guitar expo and loving it
The Spector on the far left is a U.S build Ns XL5 and my pride and joy. The Hagstrom next to it is actually a baritone (surely that qualifies) and sounds wonderful. The Overwater was built in 1986 and I back it up now with a Fodera preamp. The Washburn is an AB-35 and holds it's own against the others really well.
