I just picked up my first Warwick, been wanting to try the growl for a while, paid just under 1000 bucks for a 99 thumb BO fretless.

Its the balls.

I'm used to J-basses, so the body looks and feels like a mini bass to me, but I'm getting used to it quickly. Its also my first unlined fretless, loads of fun. Here are some shoddy pics I just took, I know no pics = no bass round here....

Couple questions for you Warwick folks...
This baseball neck Ive heard about, must have skipped mine, neck is great...do they have different neck shapes for different years?

Also do I need to treat the wood periodically? I think its the oil and wax finish?

Love the contoured back! So comfortable!

Hey mate,
Congrats on your new baby.
pre 98 necks are C shaped,or slim.From 2009 the standard is again C shaped,with the U shape,or baseball bat as some call it,is available as an option.Every 4 string Warwick neck I've played is slim,& I have small hands.I guess some folks just love to perpetuate silly sterotypes when it comes to basses they dont happen to approve of or cant afford.
Your bass will need some care.Warwick wax is what's reccomended,but you can use something else,like Howard's Feed & Wax.This can be done about every string change,or every month or two.To care for the fingerbaord it's best to use lemon oil,from any music store.
Going by the look of your headstock,the composite fibre veneer is quite faded.That happens naturally,but I suspect yours has been exposed to some sort of cleaner.Unfortunatly there's not alot you can do about it.
The serial number's last 2 digits denotes the year of production & the letter,the month.A= january,B= Febuary. The letter I isnt used.

Thanks for the info man, I didn't notice the headstock until you mentioned it. Looks near black indoors, but you can see its faded in the sunlight or in a picture with flash. Luckily, doesn't bother me ;] The wood seems a little dry, but there is wax in the grain...Beeswax work ok? I have lemon oil for the fingerboard, I treat all my rosewood boards with it.... The controls are a bit weird, seems like a volume, pup blend and a stacked tone pot.... The tone pot when I turn it all the way down it drops all output , zero... I've been playing it all night, noticing the neck dive more and more, but its not horrible. Overall I'm very happy with it so far. The tone is just incredible, so unique. I thought I would have problems with the unlined neck, but Ive been playing a lined fretless for a over a year, without looking at the neck...so I turned on some music and played along with it, not looking where I'm at, and everything sort of fell into place. Less intimidating than I thought it would be. Id take a Warwick club number, now that I'm more positive that I dig my Warwick.

No worries mate,happy to help.
The bass should have an MEC 2 band active eq with a stacked volume/pickup pan when pulled bypasses the onbaord eq,bass & treble boost & cut.Bass is centred at 100 htz & treble at 8k htz.
The bass will want to naturally sit at a horizontal position,so if you want it to angle upwards,get a nice wide padded strap.Like a Comfort Strapp for example.

I'm very hospitable, and this is the first time she has been to my home. :D

P.S. ... already modified....Had an old set of straplocks, slapped em on.... this bass is much heavier than it looks, dont want to take any chances...married her to a 3" franklin strap, in brown suede...

So, maybe I mis-understood here, Warwick went back to the older "thinner" neck profile as on my early 90's Thumb and 88 Streamer???

Maybe now I'll reconsider looking at their 5 strings again!

so, whats up with the pup placement on thumbs? do they just randomly orient them on different years or what?

not hating, i love wicks. just wondering though. and it looks sweet with 2 jazz angled really close top the bridge

That's the Thumb characteristics. Angled to sharpen the low notes and balance the high notes. Close to the bridge to get the Thumb sound (lots of growl). The pickup placement has always been like that on the thumbs, the 4 strings have a slightly more conventional setup while the 5 strings have double angled pickups at the bridge. to tighten the B string. The pickups do sound different from each other though, but not as emphatically as the usual basses. Pickup placements are anything but random!

Here is my Warwick bass and some of my Warwick bass rig. I also have a WCA115 and and WCA211 down in the garage that will be used later today!

Got my $$ at GC in Jan. for a song. I too was a former "non-liker" (hate is a strong word) of most things Warwick. My $$ is my favorite 5 string I have owned to date. I know I can walk into any situation and make it tonally right.

PS: I'd like to sell or trade my X-treme 10.1 if any body has any offers.
