i have a question about the toggle switch on my 5L. i know down is series and up is parallel, and i think the middle is single coil? what exactly are the differences in the 3 modes? series is definitely way different sounding but parallel and SC sound sorta similar. just wondering if you experts could enlighten a reverend rookie.
ahhh...good test. it looks like my neck pick-up is the one thats active in single coil mode. is that something people would select when they bought it?

Probably not...But Joey has some "Exciting Ideas!" He didn't elaborate much...Focus was on our CD Release, which went AWESOME! Of course, having a Local Legend do a re-union on the same bill sure Didn't Hurt! (Nuke & The Living Dead)

Since I have had them both, my 5L has worn TI flats and my BH5 has worn rounds. I decided at the beginning of this week to swap out the strings, inspired by a PM sent by fellow 'fisherman 4Mal. Here's what I found:
The BH5 is a warm, fat, full, big bass. Not much treble, sizzle or snap. I thought it might be interesting to see what it sounded like with flats. I didn't like it. The only really usable tone for me came from running both pickups in single coil mode, which sounded pretty good. However, one of the things I love about the BH5 is its versatility in covering a wide swath of tones (though all more toward the bass end of things), and with the flats on it, most of the settings sounded TOO warm, big, fat and full, to the point of muddiness. I'm going to go back to rounds this weekend -- either the mystery ones that came with the bass, or some TI Superalloys that I bought on a closeout sale, though I think they might have nickel coating? In any event, this experiment has convinced me that the BH5 really shines with the brightest stainless rounds you can find. Any recommendations for strings (35" scale) that fit this bill are appreciated.
The 5L kills either way. I've loved the tone with flats so much that I've kept it that way for over a year since I bought it. But after the string swap, I was bowled over by how good it sounded with the rounds from the BH5. So good I wish I could have one strung with flats and the other with rounds. I just couldn't stop playing it, and the good news was that I didn't need to worry about ruining the perfect setup it had by changing the strings -- it plays every bit as well with the rounds as the flats. I think eventually I'll switch it back to flats, but I'm going to keep rounds on it for a while. It's possible that the tone from using single coil mode on the 5L with rounds is my favorite tone of ALL my Reverends. Wow. The BH5 is more versatile in some ways, but the 5L has a natural tone that's tough to beat. I'm darn glad I didn't sell this bad boy. FWIW, it's possible that the 5L may end up passing my BH5 in playing time and ranking. I couldn't imagine ever selling my BH5, but right now I'd rather play the 5L. Better get some rounds on that BH5 fast.

Maybe you need to stretch your imagination a bit
In all seriousness though, I love flats and rounds on my P/J. Granted the flats i'm using are Chromes and a bit brighter and the rounds i'm using are mellower being nickels. I imagine I would go with SS with an 4XL or a 5L.
Thanks for the comparison of the 5L and the BH5. You half way convinced me to cave and get a 5L instead of holding out for a BH5.

New Reverend update.....The subject came up on our trip to Minnesota...Ken, my guitar player, said that issues have come up at Reverend, and new models are being delayed a bit. He was hoping for next spring, but it won't be released till maybe late next year.
On a different note, I just bought some DR Marcus Millers to put on my 5L. It's had nothing but S.I.T.s on it. Haven't restrung her yet..maybe this weekend...
On a second different note....I thought my band was playing at the Hard Rock this thursday the 25th...Actually it's November 29th...
anybody gotta pristine Bongo 5 ? jess checkin... but there's a chill wind blowin' through the 7th circle today ...
Ha! I used to have a Bongo 5HH that I bought brand new from the GC on the east side of Portland for $800. Sold it six months later for a profit. It was even orange . . .
