No one has bought my Mercalli yet. I'm kind of low key happy about that.

I cycled thru the stable and ended up back where I started with the Sting-WAL but when playing the Mercalli, my only passive bass, I was pleasantly surprised at the unique tone, that thru my last headphone amp, was really muddy.

I did only spend about 30 min with it before going back to the multi-coils on the doom bass. They have really spoiled me with the articulation and tonal options. I did find I really liked the bricks more than I have in the past though.

A good analog pre, emulated power amp and decent IR can make all the difference in the world.

Any thoughts. I keep threatening to put some flats on my Mercalli
I'm kind of mixed. On one hand, these flats sound awesome. Very smooth and a real vintage tone to them. But I actually just threw back on my GHS bass boomers because I personally feel rounds are a bit more versatile, especially if you play a a handful of different genres. I'm also primarily a pick player (realistically, 60% pick 40% fingers) and these strings don't really give me the sound I want with a pick. Even with my .60 they have this super deep thump to them, which I'm sure is desirable to some but just not me.

If I played primarily blues, folk, old rock n roll, then these strings would be all I would use.

So I just a few days ago changed the strings on my Mercalli 5 from Daddario NYXL 45-130 to SIT Powerwound 45-125 and I feel like I made a huge mistake. Both the B and E string feel dead. Did I get a bad set of strings or would the small change in string gauge make that much of a difference in the nut?
