Ah, I was wondering who obscured the figures
I think it's a pretty cool bass, with a little back story to it, but it's really sucky that the dude didn't send you that paper, and whatever else he told you he was including.

I think it's a pretty cool bass, with a little back story to it, but it's really sucky that the dude didn't send you that paper, and whatever else he told you he was including.
I would be filling that neck route for sure.
it's the same route that all modern dual truss rod 4003's have.
Yeah, I'm not sure what benefit that would have, as has been suggested.
If it's still there, you could always add a neck PU in the future, and it would still be a totally reversible mod.
It's no different than a standard 4003, strength wise.
@9c1ny, if I were in your shoes, I would be a little stretched out too,
but ever so slightly leaning toward keeping it

Spent the last few days pouring over the collection of Rics over at Wildwood & Daves Guitars web pages while waiting for my old Stingray to sell. Both shops had a real nice selections of 4003s, 5-ers and S's. Emphasis on had.
Yesterday Wildwood had a pair of Fireglo 4003s-- this morning they were down to one. My Stingray sold today, and I very nearly ordered Wildwood's last one, but decided to run to the hardware store first. 30-min later it was gone.
So my attention became focused on Dave's where before lunch they had about 6 different 4003s. After lunch... only 3! (they still have a nice selection of lefties however...)
I can't remember ever watching so many basses of the same type disappear so quickly. Tomorrow morning there may again be one fewer 4003 on their website-- just need to clear it with my loving wife first

When I got mine from them there were 5 on the site including an AC, I didn't know what and AC was at the time, and by the time I learned about it, it was gone. As were all the other 4003's within 2 days time.
I think I've heard that as well. Probably true, but the hearing of it doesn't make it so.
I have also heard that John Hall himself has said that D'Addario strings are good.
Just a question guys: I remember someone mentioned that 4003 have the neck pickup route reduced from 2014 onwards. I have not removed my 2017 pickguard yet, but does anyone proof that there is a "pool" no more?
That changed when the forum software was updated 6 ½ years ago and the thread size limit went away.
I dont have a photo of it, but the "swimming pool" route for the neck pup is indeed gone on newer models, a simple and long overdue improvement in strength at the neck joint. Hogging out that much wood was never a good idea, particularly on the 1/2" pup spacing.

I've been trying to get a Fireglo 4003 for sometime. I almost settled for an S, I almost picked a mapleglo from SW, I almost put my name on a list for 1 year from now, and then Boom! One popped on Wildwood. Bought it immediately. Should be here later today.
They seem to have availability challenges. I suppose that no surprise given the brand and the times.

Cool, I am guessing they will work. Any idea of the weight difference compared to the original tuning machines?
HB5 is the correct one. I had to special order a BT5 Xtender for mine, and it looks like they used an Ultralight machine to make it work.
Does the HB5 drop straight in or do you need to drill new holes?
