The Samick Club

Can anyone identify this? Purportedly some sort of short-scale Samick, looks a little like a Corsair but the head and the tone/volume knobs seem different than what they've got on Greg Bennett Guitars' site. Sorry for the tiny picture.

The Corsair is Samick/Greg Bennett's PJ bass. They make a short-scale version of it called the CR-13, but I doubt if the bass in the picture above is one. I happen to have one because I play short-scale basses and use a CR-13 as my knockaround/travel/backup bass.

The CR-13 is alleged to be available in either metallic red or black (the only color choices), but virtually no dealer stocks the red model, so most that you see are black.

Can't tell 100% from the photo but that looks to be a maple neck. Maple necks are available as options on some long-scale Corsairs but rosewood is the only choice on the CR-13. Also, CR-13's are only available with white pickguards.

Finally, there are VVTT knobs in the photo. The CR-13 comes with VVT controls. The headstock in the photo is painted instead of being stock clear-varnished.

If the bass IS a CR-13 then it's got a replacement neck (assuming the one in the photo is maple), been painted, and the pickguard has been changed out. That's a lot of mods for a sub-$200 bass. Whatever it is, it looks good though.

I've just joined the samick club!

I bought a samick 4 string pbass clone, headstock says "artist series". The bass caught me off guard when I found it and is likely gonna be my deal of the year (considering I bought it for $100).

I have some work to do to it before I gig with it. Change out the pickups and bridge. Luckily enough, already cane equipped with schaller tuner keys, almost $100 in value right there already!

It's a Korean made bass, I plan to take off the neck to find a date, but I have tremendous respect for Korean made 80s-90s era products. So the decision was easy. I'll get pics out after I make my adjustments.

Can I join?

I got an Abilene P bass that is made by Samick.

It cost me $30.

I bought a Bentley bass off Craigs list for $30. I
set it up, put some used buttons on it and fixed
two bad wiring connections. I filed the frets from
the 12th fret on down the neck and dressed all
the frets,

Today, I took my Bently down to my buddies pawn
shop and traded it, even Steven, for my new to me
Samick/Abilene,

The neck was pretty bowed.

I have most of the bow out already. I hope to have
it right by tomorrow.

This beats the Bently all over the place.... :bassist:

i have a short scale samick that looks just like that abilene. the electronics are all screwed up in it and i figured they weren't worth trying to fix, but maybe they are. it might need a new jack, maybe new pots - i don't know how to tell.

Hay Westhunter,

The electronics suck big time. When I took the pup
out, the magnet was at the bottom of the body
cut out. The windings fell out when I got it out.
The small amount of glue they used became brittle.
You can see that the magnet is so weak it won't
even attract the pickup next to it,

I didn't want to sink any money into it so I put
an old Squire split P in it.

Wow!!!

It is real bassy. Many would say it is muddy, but
I really like it. It has almost no fret noise. The
high strings are well defined and smooth sounding.

But, the absence of fret noise is really cool in my
opinion. It has a subtle growl in place of the fret
noise.

This bass will be great for playing at the old folks
home.

I have always wanted a mud pucker. Now I got
one with the right sound, the right looks and the
right name,

It's getting real hard to get rid of this thing,

I decided to take the dings out of the headstock.
The point on the bottom had been dinged, so I
made that round.

A ding on the top had caused a crack about an
inch deep,

I kept taking it down and it kept showing up,

I finally decided that it was not too noticeable,

This is how much I had to take off,

I have a new headstock design now, so I decided to
reward myself with a mahogany thumb rest,

I bought 2 basses for $50 (total) yesterday, this fretless and the Samick 5 string below.

The action seems fine on initial inspection. The pots need to be changed out, they don't work.

Any help on how to replace the pots cheaply? I don't want to spend a lot of cash on this, I just want it to work long enough to "teach myself" to use a 5 string. After that I will probably donate it to the church or a school and buy something better quality.

If anything is worth doing, it's worth doing well.

The cheapest way to go is to do it yourself. A cheap (Weller) soldering iron costs $10, decent quality pots can be found for $1 each but CTS pots only cost a couple bucks more each, and wire is dirt cheap. You'll need a capacitor for the tone pot… that costs a couple cents. :D It would cost $20 total.

Maybe this message got to you too late.

I never had a major problem with the 2 Samicks I had. One was ~ 93, a 5'er in blue/purple, depending on the light, and was my first new bass, plus my first 5'er. When I went fretless in 97, I went with Samick again. Mainly due to price, but after a minor setup, it worked wonderfuly. Kept it for over 10 years, most of it in storage, unfortunately. :crying: Don't have either one, but if I ever see them on Kijiji, I'll try to grab one again.

Not sure about the new Greg Bennett design stuff. Not the same to me. :rollno:

Hey guys - I know this is an old thread, but I would like to join the Samick club! I bought my bass in 2009 from a local music store who had a couple of these. They surfaced from the warehouse of a retired distributor - they had been there, unopened, since 2000.
I fell in love with it as soon as I tried it. For long enough I knew nothing about it, not even the model name - it just said Greg Bennett Signature on the headstock.
Then I tracked down a 2000 Samick catalogue which identified it as a Corsair B120N.
This surprised me as it's nothing like a modern Corsair. It plays really well and has a great range of sounds (it's active).

Here is the catalogue page which names it:

So - can I join? :hyper:
