Well i don't know about the others but in my case: i am broke, spending 50€ on strings is quite an investment & i would absolutely love it if that E string didn't break at the pole while trying to tune it, or worse, while playing for people... most people have had no issues, but some have, & i do not generally fall into the "lucky" group...

Well i don't know about the others but in my case: i am broke, spending 50€ on strings is quite an investment & i would absolutely love it if that E string didn't break at the pole while trying to tune it, or worse, while playing for people... most people have had no issues, but some have, & i do not generally fall into the "lucky" group...
My only concern about how the strings wrap around the posts is an aesthetic one. I just don't like the look. That said, two of my basses don't look so "pretty," so it's clearly not deal breaker for me.
Because some of us (rather....a LOT of us) are totally, thoroughly and completely bat guano crazy...and that doesn't even cover those of us who are just ole'-fashioned weird!
I'm a bit puzzled by the Sterling...I would have assumed that it could take normal short-scale strings of any type that would leave you some silk at the tuners...
Yes good thinking. That bass was purchased used, and had those strings on. I am guessing those are either medium or regular long scale strings. There are no silks on them, and I do not know what brand of string they are. I have a set of short scale balanced strings from Stringjoy that will go on there once I get the rest of the parts ready for a freshening up of that instrument.
Bass plays well.
I don't think it really matters.
IIRC someone who stripped a black one had a red undercoat, as if a red spray went bad so the factory went black.
Either way, you are going to have to strip it if you are going light green or blue and want optimal results.
I haven't heard of anyone having an issue with breaking.
The issue seems to be either the "look" of the string winding on the post or the thought of it breaking.
Considering the Mini has much lower tension than a full scale the chance of breakage is greatly diminished.
A couple of days ago I fitted a set of D'Addario Chrome Flat strings to my Mini P no problem. At the bridge end I had to cut the silk wrap back on the E and A strings just a little to get bare metal string over the saddle. Secured the loose silk ends with a little contact adhesive to stop unravelling.

I can't see the strings on the headstock when I play but I imagine the thought of the string unraveling must be like the pit and the pendulum for some.

I thought the concern was about the windings coming loose and killing the tone of a string or generating rattles when played.
That's what I meant by my greatly simplified (breaking), the strings coming apart.
I'm never concerned with a bass string "breaking" in the sense of a guitar string.
I've been playing since 1968, and I've never seen a bass string "break" before. I've seen where the
outer wrapping may have started to come loose, but that's usually more of a cosmetic issue than
anything else.
Agreed, I think it's all a cosmetic issue.
Even if the outer wrapping came loose (a remote possibility especially at these low tensions) I don't see it affecting tone on the other side of the nut.
That's remarkable and good for you! I've broken a number of bass strings over the years, various brands as well - mostly at the ball end, but at least once at the peg. Only once on a gig that I recall. …but I've carried spare strings ever since

When I first got the Mini I put on long scale Chromes and the E string outer wrapping came loose from the core and the string was busted. But I had 3 full size wraps around the post, not 1/4 like with the short scale set.
So the core broke, or was it just unraveled on the outside?
Was it still playable or was the string "dead".
