Has anyone "upgraded" the original pickup in the Mini-P? Such as putting in an actual Fender-branded P-bass pickup? If so was it worth the change? I have upgraded everything else on it and use it on stage weekly so IF it is an improvement its worth the cost to me. But it sounds pretty good with the stock pickup.

Mine has an EMG Geezer pickup in it. It's got a bit different tone from a regular P pickup. I didn't even feel like I needed to change it, I just had the PJ set in another bass and hated the J pickup, so I swapped them out and gave the P a try and liked it a lot.
Tone is so subjective that if you're happy with stock, don't bother changing anything.

You could get a solderless wiring harness and trial different pickups if you want to go down the pickup rabbit hole, too.
I received the mini 2 weeks ago and loved it so much that I put on LaBella Deep Talkin Short Scale even though there were some warnings that the E string could break. And it did. So I put the factory stock E back on and it's working. I decided to take the LaBella's off and put the factory round wounds back on and broke the A string. So now I have a round E, a flat A, and round G & D on the mini.. I started to read this Club thread and I'm up to page 20 (August 2020) now. I'm jumping ahead and posting this on page 462 in the hope that some one or more can tell me what string sets will fit without dealing with a broken E. I did come across today a La Bella 31 but I don't want to spend another $50 bucks unless that's recommended by you folks. I appreciate your help.

I have custom Pyramid flats and custom Pyramid tapes on my two mini p basses - I got them before LaBella became an option.

Thanks for your quick response. I found them on LaBella's site, clicked on Amazon under Trusted Dealers, and it brought me right to the set. (13 left!) Should arrive tomorrow. I probably will read the other 200 plus pages here, but for now I'm good.
All I ever use is D'Adderio short scale nylon tapes,Iv'e never broken a string,the e wrapes around the post past the silk slightly.but no problems encountered here.I love my Mini and my DA flat tapes.Just say'in

To their ears, yes. To your ears, maybe not. If you can't think of anything that's inherently wrong with the current pickup, then there's no good reason to replace it.
I think too fat on E string frets 1-5 with stock pickup.
to me, yes. i love the P bass sound, and while the mini P has it, the true vintage pickup has more of it, if that makes sense.
My Mini is the loudest bass I own. Fat, boomy low end. It has the vintage tone baked in. I can't use the Vintage button on my Rumble with it.
The high end is harsh, however. I muffle it with EQ and I turn down the tone knob a bit.
I'm sure another pickup may tame those excessive frequencies but honestly I hear the same tone profile unplugged. The E string gets funky on some frets, not in a good way, due to the short scale.
Plus the Rumble 100 is a boomy, muddy mess of an amp IMO.
For this reason I'm unwilling to replace the pickups.
My regular scale P basses sound more balanced but man does this tiny thing sound good!
