The Squier Mini Precision Bass Club

~
I cannot speak for everyone here, but I'm sure I can for some.

It doesn't matter how much or how little that a product or service costs - if the manufacturer or provider states that it is a certain way, then it bloody well SHOULD be !

See my fast food burger analogy in an earlier post, regarding reasonable expectations.

If they do not wish to be held accountable for a specification, then it's quite simple - don't PUBLISH that spec, like I said about the string gauges.

Problem is, there will still be people asking what's what, no matter how the maker handles things, and while some issues can be fixed/changed, others cannot, such as the width of the neck at the nut, which is what got MY goat about all of this in the beginning.

(I was ready to BUY one of these, until a kind soul here enlightened me about that discrepancy.)

Why not just get it right the first time ?!

Say what you do, and do what you say, and if something absolutely must change, then communicate it, from the horse's mouth on down.

I know that some large companies have drifted away from such an obvious concept over the years, but that's all that is required to get MY approval, even if the stated product might still not be my cup of tea.
~
Your 100% right Don’t matter how much something cost. They should take the time to write the right spec It’s not asking to much surely

Thanks for doing the digging.

In recent experience, I can personally vouch for the wound lengths of at least some examples of short scale bass strings of D'Addario, GHS, DR, and LaBella, as being what you pasted above, learned while buying strings for my Gibson SG bass and my Hofner Ignition Club.

These four brands will fit both of those basses, negating the need to buy LaBella's so-called 'Beatle Bass custom cut' sets for the Hofner, which only come in two gauge choices if you want flats.

In fact, my Hofner had DR rounds on it when I bought it second hand - not my cup of tea, but they fit and I tried them for several gigs anyway, before putting LaBella Low Tension Flats on it - MUCH better sound and feel !!!!

But alas, none of them will correctly fit the new Squier Mini P, as pcake and others have lamented.

And Fender is missing out on some string sales, I reckon.

One would think that they, of all companies, knowing what new bass that they were about to release, and of its competitors which could use the same strings if cut properly, would arrange to offer sets of this length of string a la carte.

And now that the Mini P has been released [regardless of my own take on it], we now have several brands of basses requiring 'Extra Short' strings, so any of the major string makers could become an instant hero if THEY were to launch the manufacture and sales of such strings.

or you could buy newtones. they custom make 'em in any length you want.

I did some more work on my mini P neck last night and today. Finished sanding off the top finish on the front of the headstock and placed my rub-on decal then added 5 thin coats of Tru-Oil to protect it using 0000 steel wool in between coats. Turned out nice. I have a set of Hipshot Lolipop Ultralites on the way. Correction on my fretboard from my earlier post: What I thought was the fretboard finish flaking off was the opposite , it was a splotch of neck finish on the fretboard so I sanded it off and conditioned the fretboard a few times. The fretboard looks so much better.

You've posted 40mm on another occasion about the Bronco.

Fender says that the currently produced Squier Bronco has a 38mm / 1.5" nut.

I played one last year, and it felt that narrow to me.

Do you own a Bronco, and/or have you measured one ? (Has anyone else ?)

Remember, between Fender and I, the thrill is gone, so to speak, therefive I had to ask.
~
I have a 2008 Badtz Maru Bronco, and I remember measuring the nut at 40. But, that was over a year ago. My memory may have squirmed around. I will remeasure next time I'm in Frankfurt.
I brought the Bronco back with me. The nut is 40mm. Keep in mind that the Badtz Maru Bronco is not the same as a "regular" Bronco.

EDIT: I see the caliper moved off the nut as I squiremed around to take the pic.

Thanks.

Yes, I notice that the caliper moved [after you took the reading and before the photo, I reckon], but the other jaw is sitting ON the nut, so I think that your reading of 40mm is OK, certainly not 38.

And while yours is a special edition, some others here have posted 40mm nut measurements for regular Squier Broncos over the last few days, so it seems safe to say that Fender has been publishing a bad spec of 38mm nut width for Squier Broncos, as well as their litany of inaccuracies about the Mini P.

I wish that I had measured the one which I tried, as I thought that it felt narrower at the time, however it was also poorly set up [nut not grooved deeply enough, and odd sounding strings which would not get into proper tune for me - maybe also too light of a gauge], so I did not even play it at the gig, and pulled out my trusty old Ric that day.

Maybe I did not give it a fair chance, as in doing a proper setup and installing some new strings, but c'est la vie.

That all said, if the Squier Bronco really does have a 40+mm nut width, I ought to grab another one, put new strings and a 4 piece bridge on it, set it up, and if I can get the mechanical elements to behave, then switch the pickup to one which is hum cancelling, possibly some kind of EMG.

It would certainly be no more bother than what some of the posters here speak of doing with the similarly priced Squier Mini P basses, plus it would have a standard 30" scale, and a Maple fretboard to boot.

Project Mini CV 60's

Got 4 layers of tinted lacquer on the neck and I am patiently waiting for my decal to come in. It's going to be CV style with gold foil fill. It's going to be so much better than the solid black these came with.

I also let my mind wander too far, and I decided to strip the paint and spray a 3 color sunburst on it. I was not prepared for what lie beneath the black...

20200915_001557.jpg

The paint is thin and underlayment is SUPER thick. It averaged to about 0.6mm/0.024in over the whole body.

It's a 4 piece body. One piece is nearly the whole width of the cavity and the other three pieces are around 2" in width. Now to do a ton of sanding to remove the chip outs and primer/filler.
