I havent experienced this with the hyperactive pickups I've got in mine.
Rather than using a radius gauge, mayhaps try setting the action based on individual string height at the 12th fret? maybe using a radius gauge is creating a situation where the middle strings are artificially further away than they need to be.
Good tip. However I managed to fix it after having some mails back and forth with Rob (Cool that he responds himself!).
He mentioned that he sets the pickups to be 7-8 mm away from the strings on the neck pickup and 5-6mm for the bridge pickup.
On my bass, it was impossible to get these so low. Even after removing the foam from under the pickups.
I added a neck shim so the strings are higher and I could get the pickups where these needed to be.
All sounds fine now!
Explains why I found the sound so bassy and high output with the stock preamp.
Hence, I reinstalled that preamp as it now gives coloration that works.
Unrelated, but out of curiosity I measured the positions of the pickups. (These are actually single coil + ghost coil on the bottom.)
These are close to the same spots as a warwick corvette. Swapping the neck upside down puts it in the exact position.
A nice find, because I like the warwick sound. But the Status is better in terms of weight and ergonomics.

I decided last night to bring out my Status Streamline to the gig and absolutely loved playing it. It was so incredibly comfortable to play and the tone was great and I think I will be using it as my main bass for gigging moving forward. Am I correct that they are no longer making them? That would be such a shame. The B string is gigantic and the tone is so clear and even across the fretboard.
Yes, you're right about Rob no longer making them. It would seem that Status is now a wood-only operation.

LOL oh yeah, it plays bad…
And almost too light to be a real bass at 6.5lbs… and the sound? You wouldn't like it
at all.
Update: my Status strings arrived so it appears Status is still up and running.
I finally acquire a Status Streamline 5 string bass. At one point, several years ago I wanted one, however didn't have the funds. When I did have the money, they were no longer in production. I kept my eyes open and got this one. It was a little dirty and you could tell it had been played. I did a string change, set up, battery change, and it's Great and ready to gig with! Extremely light and versatile.

I have a question: the bass EQ knob cap appears to be set too low... but I don't see a set screw... not familiar with these knobs!
