OK, so that's why some have an output adjustment. Wondered when that would be useful

An input/gain control allows you to adjust how much the tube and transformer are driven. Output lets you adjust... output.

I like the input better than the output, but having both is better than one for sure. Being able to drive a DI would be sweet by itself, some just "color" your signal, able to add grit to any signal with no EQ would be even better

So here's a question: I found an SVT DI schematic (someone on TB posted it a while ago) but nothing on the Khan. I'm assuming they're fairly similar as Khan was engineer with Ampeg during SVT DI's development, but how similar are they? It looks like SVT DI uses a 12AX7 but Khan DI uses 12AU7, is that correct? Anyone ever try both that could offer a comparison?

@scubaduba has had both recently and could probably offer some insight?

The SVT DI uses a 12AU7 though people have replaced with a 12AX7. I tried, but it was too noisy for my liking.

The SVT DI and Khan DI are both create. I'd prefer the Khan form factor though.

If I were to use a full-size tube like 12AX7 or 12AU7 I would likely take a 12VDC input. I like how industrial and beefy IEC feel, but taking AC mains input means using transformers for everything power-wise, and that means the pedal gets a lot bigger than it would be otherwise.

If I went with a submini tube like 6N21B I would probably take 9VDC for the same reason.

12VDC is fine by me as the Cioks power supplies will do that no worries depending on current draw. I was close to grabbing a Lightening boy TI box, but this would tick a heap of boxes for me, so I'll be patient!

12VDC is fine for 12xx7

I personally like the idea of a DI with a submini tube in a simple small 9v enclosure. I may be in the minority on this but for me, if I could have that in a small box and it got me 85-90% of what a khan or svtdi gets you, for way less money, that’s a huge win for me.

hell, whatever you end up building I’ll probably buy and at least check out .

Before I forget, how does everyone feel about fuzz for bass? I had an email yesterday asking about building one, and I haven't built a fuzz in years. The one I used to build was fuzz factory-ish, but that was because that's the fuzz I used on guitar and thought it sounded pretty good on bass. Does anyone have a bass fuzz that they love?

definitely love some fuzz on bass. That said, there’s no shortage of fuzzes out there, so I’d try to do something different. Check out like You’re Doom. Really cool harmonics as you go up the neck. Makes it A little more interesting than just a fuzz.

At a minimum though, most bass players are going to want a clean blend or a low end filtered clean blend and the mids control. The low end/clean to keep the bottom from falling out And a mids control To be able to dial-in where we want to sit in the mix. But yeah my two cents would be try to find A way to do it that’s a little different with some harmonics/octave/some thing. Also, a lot of fuzz pedals are kind of one trick pony’s.

You'd probably be a Talkbass Legend (capital L) if you could build a Tonebender type fuzz for bass that could get people to Justin Chancellor's sound. ha ha!

That said, if you're looking for feedback/ideas... Seems like most fuzzes (that I've tried anyway) dump too much in the mids if they don't have an EQ.

+1 to @letsgethandsome's comments about the Doom 2. Very synthy and cool... It's been on my list to check out for a while now! And a blend would be key!

Super Fuzz, Brassmaster, Civil War or Green Russian Big Muff. A Tone Bender-style circuit with a low-passed clean blend would be [chef's kiss].
