The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

I had time to experiment with the UA for a bit after finishing work. I am not a big fan of the Fender tone stack, which I consider to be a rather blunt instrument, and I am finding that the HPF complements it well....with the mids dimed and the treble "off", increasing the bass affects the entire low end and low mids (with a Q as wide as the Rockies), but setting the HPF around 55-60 effectively narrows the Q and makes for kind of a 1-way tilt eq.......such that bumping the bass (leaving mids at 10 and treble at 0) lifts everything between around 60 and 800 Hz. On the board above I do have active 4-band eq on the Quilter, but the HPF and UA work well as a pair. I suspect the bass knob will be the only one that I move on the UA. I get no significant noise with it on the board above (CIOKS 7 underneath).

I've gotten to mess with this little box of awesome only a couple of times.
But after a short jam session with myself earlier this a.m. I absolutely love it.
I owe many thanks to Dr Sushi @Sushi Box FX for saving me from selling a bass that I "thought" that I simply was not gelling with..

I decided to run my '03 Lakland Skyline 44-01 through the HWSH... GAAAAHH!!
It was HUGE! Just a giant, warm, comfy blanket of of huge wonderfulness. Admittedly, I prefer passive basses. One of the reasons I wasn't digging the 44-01. But this experience changed that really quickly. I didn't even touch the EQ on the bass.... pre Sushi, I would constantly fiddle with it, trying to find a sound that I could at least live with. Given, IMO, the DR Black Beauties on it just don't go with this bass...I'll be tossing a set of Chromes on it soon.
Thank you Mr. Sushi, for keeping me from making an enormous mistake.

For the record, my Lakland Skyline Duck Dunn, and D Lakin JO sound nothing but stellar through it.. :thumbsup: :bassist:

Maybe someone here can help with how to use Space Heater.
I just received mine today; first pedal I have ever bought.

I am running my Precision Ultra into SH and out to PJB Big Head with ATH-M50X Headphones.

I want to be able to sync volume with SH on and bypassed to similar level before SH; so far only way I can get this done is with volume control on SH on minimum [first sign of any sound] and gain at noon.

Switching from on to bypass in this setting the sound difference is Extremely subtle. At this time I actually prefer bypass and Bass straight into PJB.

I can lower volume on PJB and get settings on SH Volume noon and gain full range with strong saturation coming in about 2 o'clock to full on. But volume difference between On and Bypass is substantial at any gain setting.

I am not looking for saturation; maybe very slight at times.

So at this point can't play with gain because Volume has nowhere to go if I increase gain to keep volumes synced

Yup, the more recent versions of Space Heater will have an internal trimpot. I set them at 12:00 when I'm building, if you dial it back counterclockwise to 9:00 or so it should give you a more manageable output level to dial in.

Alternatively you could try a lower gain tube like a 12AT7 or 12AU7. I've had a couple people mention they love a 12AY7 in Space Heater as well. Something to consider.

Well I think I just found my first ever bad-out-of-the-box JJ/Tesla tube. I've been pulling my hair out trying to get this SMD Dr. Wattson from the May batch finished up, I re-built the circuit board from scratch twice, and nothing was working. I checked voltages on the tubes, and one was fine but the other was way off. I threw in a Psvane (the new ones for the June batch are here) and it fired right up, sounded great. So I pulled a different new JJ and it was fine.

I've seen mechanical failures in JJ where the glass envelope loses seal after being dropped or hit, but I think this is the first time I had a JJ 12AX7 that looked fine but wasn't. I feel betrayed. Psvane are more expensive than JJ/Tesla but still less than the newly-increased Russian tubes like Sovtek, EHX, Tung-Sol, etc. I know this is still a 0.1% fail rate in the time I've used JJ, but it makes Psvane start to look even more enticing long-term.

EDIT: Well I'll be. The other May pedal that had been giving me trouble, @NKBassman's Black Eye, had the exact same thing. Gutted it and rebuilt, no dice. Poked the tube socket, I was getting 7V where I was expecting 200V. Swapped the tube and good to go.

I made this demo in order to give an idea

I made the demo with a G&L, L2000 wich have a very high output level. Results would be different with a passive bass, but the relative difference between these tubes stays the same

I am guessing little blue box inside is trim pot; looking at it with tube on bottom which way do I turn?

PS; I looked at it vertical with trimpot bottom right and turned left that will work thanks
