The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

Hey...I have a older Particle Accelerator(F-2B) that I love the sound of, but lately it has gone from slightly hissy to doing some untimely snap-crakle-pops. Could this be the mini tube? Is that tube something I could access and replace, if so what is the recommended part? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

DW is an excellent sounding preamp, as I ran 5 of them through testing last night I started to think a UA/DW two-channel preamp would be absolutely killer.
It would add some complications to the build, but it would be cool to run either independently, stack them (with order switch), and run both in parallel (UA clean/DW dirty and vice versa)

It's hard to tell without hearing it myself, but it's possible. The most recent unit I worked on that had intermittent snap-crackle-popping was actually due to a bad capacitor on its way out, there are a couple things it could potentially be. Changing the tube isn't super fun to do, but it's possible if you're handy with a soldering iron and comfortable taking things apart. The tube in most of them is 6N21B, unless it's a REALLY old one in which case it's a 6N17B-VR. Is there a version number printed on the circuit board?

That would be cool, and something similar could be done but not exactly that. A tube has 2 gain stages available; UA uses 2 and DW uses 3, so either way I'm sharing at least one stage. This would mean I could add a boost-type stage to DW for some cascaded gain action, but directly doing UA into DW wouldn't be possible without adding a third tube to the pedal.

If you can add three tubes, we’re not that far away from adding a nice transformer and a power tube section. I’m liking the natural progression this is taking. Maybe a Hammond 1590F could hold it all? Give it 30w and call it a studio series.

Earlier, we talked about a DW in a small box, using FETs to makeup a gainstage, and you said this,

"It's possible, but personally I would rather put it as the first stage. There is a lot of benefit from having a tube first stage, but personally I think there is more benefit from having a tube final stage, so it would essentially be like putting a solid-state boost in front of a tube amp. Doable, probably wouldn't sound bad, but I think it would take some work to get it to sound the same as the original DW.

And I'm not committing to doing a single-tube DW design, but if I did then Elementary absolutely wins the naming contest."

So maybe dual tube design with full UA/modified DW.

Here is a pic of the board...

But wait.. wouldn't the tone stacks of a UA and a DW fight each other? or cancel each other? or do something unexplainable to each other? Me not smart on much things.
I would imagine the channels would be separate, like Smoke Signal. You'd be on one or the other, so the tone stacks wouldn't be on at the same time.

In fact, looking at Smoke Signal, I can imagine one row of knobs being Gain-Bass-Mids-Treb-Vol for the DW channel, one being Gain-Bass-Mids-Treb-Vol for the UA channel, one switch to bypass the UA tonestack, and the second switch to do something cool I haven't thought of yet. That would be a very comprehensive tube preamp pedal.

Something comparable to the Two Notes LeBass maybe ? Where you can run both sides in parallel, or in series with each other ? That would make it a 3 flavor preamp.
Bonus points if it had two inputs that could swap channels or possibly even sum together. And in a perfect world there might even be A/B/Y out.

Yeah. If only Sushi made a pedal with 3 tubes. That would be awesome.
I’d jump on that.
I wonder if anyone else would order it?

Whadya think, Box? Is it too crazy?

Touche’… however I was leaning more towards the added power section that has been conversationally toyed with recently. Basically I’m selfishly asking for a low power Sushi Box tube amp.

Although I hesitate to cloud the Sushi Master's head with my dreams of sugar plum fairies, a product like the Quilter Interbass is truly an amazing tool (so much so that I have 2). It's a DI, a 33/45 watt practice amp, a backup amp, preamp and cab sim all in a little box on my board ready to do whatever I ask of it.....basically a Finally with a tiny power amp (and a parallel FX loop who's return jack can double as an aux in, and a phone's out jack) in a pedal enclosure.....not really practically doable with a tube power stage though, but I'd still love it as a hybrid.
