Plug into the back of your LMKII.....it bypasses the preamp and goes straight to the power section.
Ummm... no it doesn't. It only bypasses the first gain stage.

Most of the amps I've seen, the efx loop is BEFORE the EQ, but I'm definitely not guaranteeing all are that way. Just IME at least.
 
If you're looking for just a great clean sound with volume to spare than the LMKII is plenty for most anyone. Actually, I bypass the pre most of the time and just use my onboard eq...you can do this by going into the effects return on the back of the amp. It gives you a bit less compression and a bit more dynamics.


I do agree with this but... ehhh... clean sound is not always enough for me. That's my point. I guess built in distortion is better than pedal, though I may be mistaken.
 
The effects loop is parallel, not series. Series would be
between the preamp and power amp. If you run anything
in the effects loop, you can still use the eq on the amp.
series/parallel makes no diff. In both cases, the efx loop is between the pre and power.

Look at the block diagram again. The only diff is if the original signal is "OR'd" with the efx loop return or not, which makes sense.

Also, emjazz, I just tested it, and your post is incorrect. :)

The block diagram IS correct. The EQ is in force regardless of your "entry point" with the bass.

And yet, you can't bypass the preamp as it is now, you'd have to change the jumper to series. It makes the amp more flexible IMHO. Being able to use other preamps with
the LMII (Sansamp, Ravenlabs, etc) is a real plus for me.
Again, series (or parallel) mode does not "bypass the preamp". All it does is control whether a straight signal is mixed with or interrupted by, whatever's going on in the efx loop. All you're bypassing is the first gain stage, which is only one part of the preamp.

The rest of the preamp, including the filters and EQ are still in force. As such, if you plug another preamp into the efx return, you're still "ganging" two preamps together. However, if this is the desired result, bypassing that first gain stage does make it easier to do without worrying as much about overdriving something, tho.

In short, the LMII does not have a true power amp input. Trust me. I tested this just last night.

Just depends on what your band and your production crew wants.

If the desired result is to mimic and amplify your stage tone as much as possible, you probably want post. This is usually harder to deal with in a FOH mix because you're trying to shape your tone for the stage, while they're trying to shape your tone for the entire venue.

Otherwise, of course it's just your raw bass tone, which is easier to EQ best for FOH overall mix, but may not reproduce "your sound" as much. This is usually most desired by production folks just cause it's easier for them to work with, and they don't have to worry about the FOH mix if you tweak your EQ during the gig.
 
Regarding the tuner out of the LMII. If the XLR input is parallel to the regular 1/4" jack input could you not (with the correct cable of course) just use the XLR input as a pre-gain tuner out or a link to another pre/power setup?
I don't think so. It's implemented such that you can hook something else up and use it and the unbalanced 1/4" input at the same time. As such, it should be (and likely is noting the input impedance is different) buffered, which means it's not "hard wired" to the 1/4", and is literally an input only. I haven't tested this, tho, and the block diagram doesn't say.

Again, no, you can't.

Again, it doesn't matter whether the efx loop is series or parallel. In neither case is the return a true power amp input.

In both cases, you still pass through all the tone shaping and whatever gain/cut is associated with those controls.

Don't take my word for it... try it yourself. Switch it back and forth and then twist the EQ and filters on the LMII. In both cases, it WILL affect the output (as well as whatever controls are on the preamp you're plugging into it). I tested it. The block diagram is correct.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not hammering the LMII. I do own one and like it A LOT! It just has its limitations.
 
Ok. Call me an idiot, but I'm not understanding this.
For instance, with my GK800, if I plug my Sansamp Para
driver into the effects return input, only the master volume
control is usable on the GK. Is there no way to make that
happen with the LMII? When I put my Sansamp inline now,
there isn't much change in tone and I don't always want to
put everything in the front end of the amp. I thought
changing the effects loop to series put the effects after
the preamp, between the preamp and power amp. Do I be wrong?
