I think maybe i should get A TA503 as a backup....Please talk me into it!

John

Prior to hearing the R 500, the TA503 was the model I was most interested in, as it seemed the most similar (tube preamp and all) to my Music Man HD-500, which I really like. I did play the TA503 at NAMM, and I liked it very much.

But man, that R 500 just knocked my socks off, as did the Classic 300. I did not get to hear the SD800, though. :rollno:

Tom.

Am I missing something or overlooking something here

Definition of headroom: The number of decibels by which a system exceeds the minimum defined requirements. The benefit of headroom is that it reduces the bit-error rate (BER), and provides a performance 'safety net' to help ensure that current and future high speed applications will run at peak accuracy, efficiency and through-put.

Basically, headroom is the amount of wattage you have in your head over what your cab can handle. It makes it easier to keep your cab running at its best performance without having to strain your head by maxing it out.

Thanks Tom. Re: 12" cabs, have you tested the EA CXL112 and the markbass cabs? Will the markbass 2x10 get a credible willis as well as marcus tone?

I have tested the CxL-112, and I thought I had updated my 1x12 shootout thread, but it looks like I might have missed that. I'll try to remedy this.

As for the 102P, well, it does have a very bright, though rather thin, tweeter, with a fairly deep, wide, low end, and some midrange scoop. So, I guess it's kinda in that general tonal range, but honestly, I could see both satisfaction and disappointment, there, depending on the listener's preferences and expectations. It is one freakishly light 2x10, though!

I gave the 2x10 combo amp a try tonight and I really like it or rather I'm really trying to like it. I understand how people say it has very clear high's and mids which is a good thing but the lows...I know I only used the 10's but if you pair the LM head with 12's, will that give it more of that ooomf factor? (I never had the chance to try that tonight)

what do you do for service? There's apparently no US service facility. Please don't tell me you have to ship overseas or back to guitar center? Also GC told me you are required to buy the extended warranty to get US service. This is a deal killer IMO since almost every boutique bass amp out there requires repairs IMO...

Send a pm to Peter Murray. He'll answer that best.

FWIW....my MB head had issues and it was repaired in Switzerland by the distributor. Get this....I mailed the head on a Monday and it was delivered back to me on Wednesday repaired. Gone for three days.

Marco is keen to deliver on all fronts with his products.

Not quite sure why you think the MB qualifies as 'boutique' nor why boutique/hand built amps require repairs...but you've got some mis-information going with the warranty too.

It's 2 years and at no additional cost. They are repaired in the US, and not directly by Guitar Center. The warranty work is contracted out to a 3rd party, listed on my warranty at "TWG Innovative Solutions, Inc. " as the plan administrator and "National Product Care Company" as the provider.

How long did it take for you to get the warranty? I was told it would come in the mail. It's been 3 weeks.

As long as you have your reciept showing the warranty and you need work they'll do it. The paperwork that comes is just the official stuff, complete with list of things they won't fix (ie, this warranty is void if the amplifier is used with a bass guitar, warranty void if god hates you, warranty void if exposed to oxygen, etc)

as for why they "force" you - it is because if you didn't have it you'd have to ship your MB gear to Italy, and that would simply suck. They include the warranty int eh price so they can ensure if you have problems they can be fixed up quickly (and cheaply, for both parties involved)

Who is "they"?

That's what guitar center in chicago told me. I think some of the mis-information needs to be handled with your distributor network. Good to hear that is incorrect and that you have a USA warranty servicing.

Contact me offline ([email protected]) . I'd be interested in reviewing your amp and possibly working out something to be included in my next book/cd...

Um...As great as BurningSkies is, he is not an employee of Markbass, just a knowledgeable consumer.
