I heard the only reason the who performed is because CBS uses their songs for lead in to all the CSI shows and they owed it to CBS as part of the deal. A medley is not rock'n out!

Haven't read every post but the show was good enough. Daltry had put in the time to make the thing work.

Townshend however was a major disaster. Fakey winging his arms around and totally missing the guitar. Horrible mistakes when he actually played. He had his moments, but if I played like that I'd consider it pretty much a night to forget.

That other guitar player covered for him well though. And the bass guy was perfect.

I thought the performance was solid. It wasn't the Who, but it was good - so much better than most flavor of the month Superbowl performances.

The Who was the greatest live band ever. You might disagree. But, you'd be wrong. Moon was one of the greatest drummers ever. Entwhistle one of the greatest bassists ever. You can't replace that. Even Hendrix didn't want to go on after them. They were scary good. Not what we saw tonight, unfortunately.

The stage and lighting were just awesome. It looked more like a Pink Floyd show, than the Who. Just incredible. Mesmerizing, even.

As far as all of the old guy talk... music is a lifetime venture. I'm not gonna quit until I'm dead. You can pry my guitar out of my cold dead hands. And if anyone ever asks me to play the Superbowl, the only possible answer is yes. If that offends some of the young pups, just remember, you'll be on the other side of 30 or 40 or 50 some day. You gonna give up what you love just because someone says you're too old? No, I didn't think so.

A couple of things....

One is that Zak Starkey playing drums for The Who shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. He's been playing with them for a long time. When I saw them in 2000 he was with them.

As for the show being pre-recorded, it was not. The show was live, but the Who had pre-recorded a version of it that can be down-loaded by "Rock Band" owners.

As for whether they still had the goods...you can't ignore crowd response when evaluating a band's performance (unless you're in one of those bands that never draws a crowd). The live audience sang along on every song tonight. Clearly, they were into it. The sound quality we got might not have been great, but that sometimes happens with televised events. It was obvious, though, that the folks in Miami were thrilled to see the band and take part in the show.

It's easy to cast aspersions. It is much harder to summon up the energy and intensity necessary to get out there and play live for the millionth time.

if you ever did a windmill and drove a whammy bar straight into the palm of your hand, you'd think twice about doing heavy windmills on a strat with a whammy bar, too. of course, that begs the question "why is he still using a guitar with a whammy bar?" but yeah, it wasn't his best moment ever, but he's played much worse occasionally when he was younger, and there's still only one pete, so i was cool with it.

Totally agree. In a few phone calls I made after the game and on another "non-musical" forum I visit once in a while the consensus seems to be that the show was a big success.

I still can't believe how bad Townshend was though. Geez it just made me cringe a couple of times. For most folks though, it seemed not to matter at all.

I'm not a huge Prince fan, but his Super Bowl performance was unbelievable. It was pouring rain, and he acted like it was 75 degrees and sunny. He's a real pro. There are a lot of "performers" out there who wouldn't have gone on.

ya, he's a completely out to lunch weird guy, but he killed during that show.

but i think this who set is my favorite of all time.

I laughed so hard I nearly fell out of my wheelchair when I read this. How many threads and discussions have there been about Pino on TB?:rollno: And how many recordings and tours has he been on? He is an amazing bassist, and any band/artist should be proud to have him.
