This is what happens when you seek fame before talent...

He's actually a very talented guitarist and artist as a whole. He's been a touring musician for a while. He has albums that I'm (and many are) quite impressed with. He made a mistake. This isn't the first slip up in the history of slip ups.

I'm honestly not familiar with the Jonas discography, they could very well have some great pop tunes, but he's quite clearly not a "very talented" guitarist.

He didn't "make a mistake", he played like a garage band hobbyist on national television.

That's why so many professional musicians are finding it amusing ;)

I can't believe the number of people on here dissing a fellow musician. Like any of us are perfect and beyond making a mistake (regardless of the size of the stage). Is it humorous? Sure! It's happened to all of us. But diss the poor guy? May karma bite all of ya right in the a$$. :rollno:

"Poor guy"?

He's a multi-millionaire and is being given opportunities that someone with the same talent but without the looks, fame and marketing would never have.

Save your tears, it's really quite funny

I hate when such a well thought out meme is ruined by glamouring.

Honestly, that is 75% of "musicians"...nobody wants to take the time to truly learn, they just want to jump up on stage and "rock". I know for a fact that the Dallas music scene is the most pathetic pile of poopie I have ever seen.

Hey the guy is only human.. not every solo is going to be perfect all the time! what sucks even more is fellow musicians putting him down and humiliating him even more for it!! NOT KOOL!!
Keep in mind it could happen to any one of us even you!

Relax, no one is being humiliated.

I'm sure Mr. Jonas isn't crying into his swimming pool full of money over the online opinions of strangers, he'll likely never be aware that any of us exist at all.

And no, this couldn't "happen to anyone", which is why people are laughing about it; this is just what happens when you hire a guy who owns a hammer instead of an actual carpenter ;)

The sad truth folks is that the listening public have tin ears. Always have, always will. Only we musicians can tell the difference, but few on here are raking in the cash like these people (or their handlers more likely). These kids in the post MTV generations just need to look like models and pantomime well.
And as far as songwriting talent, better musicians and writers are making a living selling a song or two that these folks record. The rock n' roll thing from the 70's to the 90's was a fluke. Most of the music that we all love was made by 4 bands, The Funk Brothers, the Wrecking Crew, and the Mussel Shoals Swampers or Booker T. And the MG's who played at Stax. That's it.

I'm not that old and I don't need a nap, but thank you for looking out for my well-being.

Anyway, if the point isn't that obvious to you, or you just decide to take it the wrong way and take it personal like so many others do, here it is: For someone to play in front of those cameras and in front of that crowd, on that stage (I feel I've said this 5 or 6 times in this thread already) that is supposed to celebrate excellency in Country Music, I honestly think he owes the fans and the people in the audience an apology for his obvious lack of either care or lack of preparation for that gig. Now, I have no idea what or if there were any technical difficulties and/or physical or mental breakdowns. However, all I do know is that it started out as a nice, melodic solo and ended up a train wreck. YMMV

To be fair I dont think any of these award shows are filled with "excellency". More like a mix of crap thats popular and some good stuff. They aim for high ratings, thats why its nick jonas playing and not some guy whos better. I dont really disagree with you that he's not a great guitar player, I just dont see the point of starting a thread based on negativity. Although that doesnt bother me that much, what got to me was the "my heart aches for this generation" comment. And its not like im pissed off at you, its more like REALLY?? come on dude! you know there have always been bad musicians who get too much attention. You're using him as the poster boy for my generation!!? You either come off as a troll or a grandpa:roflmao:

Knowing you as long as I do on talkbass, I'm dumbfounded by this. Are we watching a different video? I hear 5 seconds of flub in that solo, half of which I really think (as I said in my last post) was the guitar being unexpectedly out of tune... and the rest that could have been attributed to anything. If you have that much experience, did it occur to you that maybe he couldn't hear the band at all? Or possibly his guitar?

This video must be definitive proof of how badly Eddie Van Halen sucks:

Except this audio atrocity has nothing to do with Eddie's playing and everything to do with the playback being in the wrong key due to sample rate issues

I never said he was the poster boy of this generation. I said, "May I present the poster child of this phenomenon, well, the latest one anyhow...", and that was pointing to the title of the thread which is This Is What Happens When You Seek Fame Before Talent. If you look further through the thread you will see that I posted a video of my band with a 20 year old guitarist who I feel is FANTASTIC, and I go on to say how I feel about his playing.

I found this clip of Kelsea Ballerini playing guitar. I play a little bit of acoustic guitar and can vouch, her chops and strumming "feel" are more than competent, and certainly way better than mine:

ps Nobody's yet posted the Nick Jonas solo in full context. The name of the song is "Peter Pan" and the lyrics are "Never going to grow up, Never going to be a man." Funny stuff!

The backing band sounded good in that 30 second clip. So... we all can still aspire to that.

If only the Billboard audience demographic preferred balding late-30s Asian bass players, I wouldn't have to worry about seeking talent before fame. Not that I worry about seeking either. I think a few people clapped after my karaoke rendition of "Sex on Fire" at the local dive bar, however I did sink a few pool balls during all the vocal breaks. Multi-talented.

But just in case a Billboard exec / forum member needs a lead guitarist for their next show, PM me.

It's hilarious that a guy is this upset that people are ripping on a Jonas Brother playing guitar. Hey, some of us HAVE played award shows and understand the pressure. It's not always jealousy to laugh at something, and you need to be pro enough to power through any situation if you are going to be up there.

Maybe consider how there are monster players all over that awards show who didn't get a spotlight solo, but should have. Instead that guy gets his "I'm little Wayne I can play guitar too and skateboard! I'm multi talented" moment and blows it. It's great karma really.

It's not just one guy either, come on folks...life is funny, laughing is good for you, and no one one was harmed in the making of that terrible video ;)

In fact, I'd be willing it bet money that Nick himself had a good laugh with his buddies after the show about hilariously bad that was.

If I ever performed that poorly on a gig, and wasn't fired afterwards as a result, I know I sure would; the rest of the band would undoubtedly be giving me a good ribbing as well.

It's actually a pretty common occurrence among pro players, we're all our own worst critics; as result we also don't make mistakes very often, so when we do (especially this badly) it's pretty amusing for everyone involved.

Someone else might even sneakily quote the mistake again later for added laughs :roflmao:
