Thoughts on this bass?

"Update*** I’m taking this down soon to trade so if you want it, buy it! Stop screwing around and asking me dumb questions like “what’s your rock bottom”. TRUTH you won’t find a cheaper 1974 players grade vintage Jazz Bass ANYWHERE!) according to reverb data there hasn’t been one this low priced so there you go. PROOF lowest sold was $1960. This opportunity will be gone for good in a week. Just put it on you CC and go and tell your significant other about it later."

If he is going to trade it, then why still have it listed for sale? I understand salesmanship, but such aggressive text (like the rest of the description) is a turn off for me.

I dig it. This bass may be a gem in need of some love. The bass is priced correctly in that there is enough room in the price to get it refretted and the binding replaced. I am pretty sure that would appraise well over $2K, provided the truss works correctly. I would also sand down the back of the neck, steam out the divots, so the back of the neck feels smooth again. Love to yellowing on the poly. Bridge and Electronics are not original, although the Fralins and Babzic bridge are better than the original equipment. The burn on the headstock should give all you lovers fo relic vintage goodness a big boner.

Aye? Seems a bit of a drama merchant. Just pop the neck like any other seller does. Also, who thinks a dying lawn is the perfect spot for a photo shoot?

Personally I think the neck looks like ass. This whole bass looks like an archaeological find. The frets are flat-topped and dull, and have been over-rounded at the ends. They slope gradually down towards the edges of the neck; a nasty habit of over-keen luthiers. Looks like the fret tangs have punched out into the binding as well:

Diseased, crumbly binding as well. Horrible. It would take five minutes to make this look a lot more presentable. When the vintage bubble finally bursts people will realise that they needlessly fetishised somebody's worn out old trash. This bass is a perfect example of this.

So much mojo you could scrape it off with a razor blade and smoke it.

"It’s been played just like it’s supposed to be because it’s a VINTAGE PLAYERS grade guitar! (meaning you aren’t superficial bedroom musician that cares about vintage spec). You are a person that actually plays music out and you want the real shaging deal."

Again, just tough-guy speak for this being a worn out hulk of a bass. It seems odd and desperate that the seller chooses to denigrate potential buyers. Sort of like 'if you can't handle this dirty, worn out bass then you aren't a real musician'. The swearing makes me think they are angry that their cash cow bass isn't delivering.

Looks to me like it is a compromised survivor of a flood. It may well play as great as the seller states, but I doubt it. For that kind of money I would build a Warmoth that I KNOW will be great. BTW he forgot to mention the crack in the headstock by the E-tuner. Common I know but still noteworthy. Also regarding the burn - it does look faked. I have a Musicmaster with real cig marks put there accidentally by me and they look nothing like what's on this bass.

Eeeew.

Does it come with a tetanus shot?

BS. That's not playwear...that's damage.

The cracked/crumbling binding plus the damage to the fretboard finish (cracked and missing) suggests that this is more than played hard. Left in a Texas shed in the summer or something like that. That shot of the neck up by the body, you can tell that the frets are flattened (who plays hard enough up at that end of the neck that frequently to flatten frets from playwear? No one)...suggesting that they've tried to fix some ski-jump up there. The wood also looks oddly 'scalloped' in that area...water damage that got under the frets maybe?

A bass that has played a ton, obviously, from the era when people played crap out of their instruments. I like it.

The worn finish on the binding would explain that.

Agreed.

I suspect water damage too. Nice catch on the headstock crack. I missed it.

I like the look, but that neck is ROUGH and all of that wear would be a turn off for me. I don't think the price is too far off for the age, but with the issues it has, I would be a hard pass.

This may accurately sum up where I am at.

He's pretty belligerent for someone who wants my money.

At any rate, this:

***I will not take the neck off so you can see the stamps, there is no way in hell this thing isn’t authentic***

is a dealbreaker. If you use the term vintage you'd better be able to prove it. I doubt the body is original.

Also, I'm sure he's terrified that if he pulls the neck he'll never be able to get it back on again.
