The wood is quite thin between the cavity rout and the face, a good tug on the cord with a straight plug and it'll break. The side mount is much better in that regard.

Question for you experienced Gibson thunderbirders . What strings do like best on your bird ? I'm a big fan of Daddrio pro steels on my spectors, but Just don't know if those bright strings would be a good fit. Considering on using this bass live this weekend and I got to put fresh strings on it and since I'm a noob with this new bird I need some good advice . Thanks in advance.

There are basses, and there are Thunderbirds!
I use DR Black Beauties on all my birds, which a lot of fellow TB'ers on this forum also seems to like.
The Black Beauties have a wonderful nice warm broken-in sound to them without being overly bright and zingy, which seems to last a really long time.

I've used DR Stainless and Ken Smith Rockmasters for awhile now.......That said I recently picked up two sets of Nickel Wound to try on my '76s, so far I like them, they're a little warmer than Stainless.

Maybe save up for an Epiphone Classic? A great Thunderbird at a modest price
I was going to say the same thing Mark said, but he beat me to the punch! I love my Epiphone Classic Pro and the price is great for the quality. If you're looking for something real cheap, a standard Epi bird is still a bird!
I'm thinking some daddario XL's nickel but a tad of brightness. Nickel wound too. I'm definitely thinking nickel wound.
I've got a set of bb I tried on another bass . Prolly won't fit this bird, speaking of which do you need super long strings to reach that last tuning post? Ill have to look at it when I get home.
I use daddario nickel rounds .100. Just a little bright/bite.
Remember, you're not gonna be able to break in new strings by this weekend...
So then I take it that the tbirds take regular long scale strings ? Im not home to look at that yet.

I checked out a couple of your vids on facebook, looks like you're using a pick with your Spector - Thunderbirds + Roundwounds + a pick = Greatness!
My strings are usually .45 -.105 Long Scale, I need to try some BB's soon
