I've always wanted a Voice of the Theater rig (amps and speakers), but they've always cost more than I was able or willing to pay.
That said, the sweetest stereo I ever used was based off the 1978 Technics Professional Series[1] gear and Bose speakers[2]. Their turntable into their parametric EQ pre into their 15 band(?) stereo EQ into their amp into a pair of Bose 901 speakers. Forget the 901 pre, just play with the EQs until everything is perfect. Once it was set, it was set. You could feel your insides resonate with the phased bass, and it felt good. We sold those brands at Melton's Stereo and HiFi, but on my pay, they were waaaay out of reach.

[2] Bose were always all over the map for me. I liked the 802s and 901s, but the lower end stuff was not so hot, although the 201s were OK for the money. Even the 802s and 901s could be fiddly.
