Thunderbird Club

Same here with my HPF. For some reason, at our practice space I get a really boomy low A that really bothers me. One of the guitarists said the same thing for himself after I mentioned it. The past two practices I've had the HPF set to about 80 as well and it really cleans up that boom.

Did you had the Broughton Resonant Filter Equalizer or do I remember incorrectly?
Somebody here had that.

It would, and that may yet happen. But I really don't want to get into changing all the black hardware out on it-- but I'm sure someone could make black PUP covers. Then there is the PUP placement.... PUPs would make a difference, but there's no addressing the placement issue. Right now I'm enjoying the LaBella black nylons. That gives it a different sound instead of trying to mimic the '64. I may even sell it at some point now that I bought the NR. Seems like I would recover my cost and then some given current prices. But I'm going to hang onto it for now. I've bought a bass and sold one to feel better about not having too many and regretted doing so. If I find that I'm just not playing it (plays so good I can't picture that), I may considering letting it go.
Letting it go will cause the HS to hit the floor.

Entwistle Wednesday you say…
Not a Tbird but a sweet playing Rainsong Carbon Fiber Acoustic Electric bass custom built for John that I now own…
John at the LA House of Blues playing it.

It’s the only custom bass Rainsong ever built. They decided to get out of the bass business after making about 6 AE basses and instead just focus on guitars.

(Pay no attention to that cloud reflection on the front of the bass).

I saw him with his band 'The John Entwistle Band' in a little club in Mass in 1999, then the next night in Providence RI. The stage in Worcester was about 2' high and I got there early and stood maybe ten feet in front of him along with most of the other bass players from the area. I used to play in that place a lot. He sounded just like you'd think, played with both fingers and a pick. Did Boris the Spider which was the highlight for me, did a long solo and the breaker tripped in the middle for his amp which actually happened several times during their set. The next night they took half the stuff into the club which was bigger, they sounded great in Worcester.

if I’m counting right I have 16 firebird base pickups at my disposal and I rarely use a bridge pickup on a 2 pickup base…
I’m hoping this DC base becomes a main player, so no skimping on the pickup.
I’m thinking an exposed pole piece pickup from my EB might be the ticket, I really love those.
You know what they say - if ya got a itch, scratch it!

Now there’s a rose between two…. Roses. But why not one Ebony (in place of a white one) for the trifecta?

What changed around 2000? I know I read someplace about better wood before mid 2000s or something like that.
Pre 2000 birds seem much harder to come by (maybe fewer made?) and the one I played did play and sound even better than my 2012 bird. Possibly different pups or better wood or different neck geometry, but it felt and sounded different in a better way. I’d pay up to $2000 for one if I were in the market (about a $500 premium over a standard post 2000 model). JMHO YMMV

I’ve heard that he and his band put on a great show but did so at insane volume levels.

Apparently, the seller stripped the hardware off a coupla 2021 'Birds. ???

There's a seller who regularly strips new Fenders and sells the parts on ebay, I've bought several necks from him. I just bought an Am Jazz neck with a black headstock for my Fender P/J from him, also sells new parts , that was new.

I would say try to find one locally if at all possible. The neck is "chunkier" than I was imaging. I was thinking a little bigger than the original, but it's more than a little chunkier than the 60s. The VPs and my '76 are/feel a little bigger than the '64. The NR is clearly bigger than those. Sounds like complaining--it's not as I like it just fine. There's nothing wrong with it and it's great to play, just doesn't feel like a Thunderbird neck. The thing I notice it it "sticks out there" a little farther that Reverses. Likely normal for NRs given how they are made. I can't use/try my fav '64 string on it because they are not long enough (Infelds). In that respect it's like the '64 Epi.

Yes, the NR necks are very substantial, much bigger than my 2018 reverse, they play really nice though, I think probably the 12" radius and having been pleked has a lot to do with that.

I'm mostly immune to neck size, but my 2 NR's are more Jazz-like than Pbass like. Probably the best neck I have ever used was the Tony Franklin Pbass, and it was smack dab in the middle of a jazz and pbass.

.

Yup the TF Franklin necks are nice, very easy to play, they feel more like J necks to me than a P bass, part of that may be because it's a fretless and feels thinner than a fretted neck of the same dimensions, Jazz and reverse T-Birds being my favorites.
