Thunderbird Club

I remember buying 70s fender's and generally wanted to change the pickups, and often did. Likely the low point for fenders from my experience. Neck pockets often had large gaps that pics wouldn't even stay in.
I had a '73 P bass at one point, I was playing in a band and had my '73 4001 as a primary player so I picked that up as a second for 300.00 maybe 350.00 in '78. I remember thinking "everybody has one of these, I guess it's time I did", I kept it for a year or so but just didn't get on with it - It was an Ash(?) body with a Maple neck, and as I recall a bit heavier than my Rick, I'm certain somebody somewhere treasures it, but I just could not find a way to gel with that bass - I really am a Gibson Girl.

Man do I feel for you. You need to hop the border, get it taken care of in a few months, then get out! A drummer I used to play with had shoulder surgery and he was miserable before and a while afterwards, but once the recovery was making good progress he felt much better. I hope you can get what you need soon. Take PillO's advice--he knows what he's talking about. His thinking may be questioned in other areas, but he's spot on here. ;):D
Good advice, just stay away from PillO’s special watermelon elixir, it’s a pretty seedy concoction. ;)

I agree, but we are talking Gibson here. Keep in mind it’s a neck through with a unique headstock. Might be easier for Gibby to use the same 35” necks for both the 4 and 5 string and just drill tuning holes as needed. Again, just a guess.
Studios, and their little sibling the Thunderbird short scale, are set necks like the NRs.

FWIW, I tried the SIT "flats". Far less smooth than EBCF's. Took 'em right back off.
I’ve not tried the flats. Not realty a flats kind of guy except for Chromes on on of my P basses and EBCFs on the Goth. But I’ve said before, they’re all I use on my acoustic guitar and I love the Power Steels on a lot of my other basses.

looks good with that stance. Although I prefer the original bonnet (hood) line. Is that just to lol different? Or needed to clear a different engine?

We didn’t get any Pacers assembled here, AMI were not interested and passed on the Gremlin as well (except for one they built as a taste test). It as getting close to the end here, by 78 all local Ramblers (AMC) and Triumph sedans were gone and AMI switched wholly to Toyota.

I have an Australian Pontiac G8 GT, a Holden I think in Australia?

WARNING FSO TALK/RANT
I remember about 5-10 years ago, you could not give away a 70’s 7ender. They’d be $1500 max. I was just going through the classifieds to see what’s out there these days, and 70’s 7enders are now $3000-5000 and selling!!! What the fvck?!

I vividly remember people here on TalkBass slagging 70's 7enders and proclaiming that nothing would ever convince them to buy one because they were all heavy and they sucked. I am willing to bet that some of those people currently own a 70's 7ender.

G strings falling off the edge of the neck is now a status symbol.

I think I will not be joining the SIT cult just yet.

1 June L&M's 'Monster Days' sale begins. RS66 (various gauges) are going for C$23.99 (usually C$30.75) so I will be stocking up a little.

A few other things of note:
@Gaolee - sousaphones are not on sale
Plastic trombones are C$25 off (kind of tempting)*
Electric Kazoo C$5 off*

* I don't really need either, but the ability to annoy others is priceless...
Ah come on. I love them on my ‘13 NR. They last a long time. And they feel smoother (to me anyway) than the SS Rotos.

Well, the verdict is in on the newly purchased Goth. She’s in virtually pristine shape and a keeper!

I don’t think the bridge screws have ever seen a screwdriver, the pickguard screws were in so tight I don’t think they had ever been molested either, the same with the truss cover screws - not a mark on them and in tight, the truss rod hex end doesn’t look like it’s ever had a wrench in it, the control cavity screws were equally tight and everything inside was completely original, not a mark or a scuff or a scrape anywhere on the bass. It’s a 2019 Chinese model and as best I can tell it was played very little if at all. Of course the tuners are sloppy (expected on the China Goth), the 8th fret was a bit high under the D string and the nut could be cut better.

Just completed a set up on it and was able to drop the bridge way down, adjust the truss rod, file the high fret and set the intonation. She now plays very nicely and has super low action 3/64” at the 12th fret on an open E. Not sure what Brand the strings are, they’re round wounds with red silk at the tuners and bridge (brass ball ends). They sound good but I’ll probably switch over (at least temporarily) to EBCFs.

This Goth will go under the knife (or router actually) to install two additional pickups for a four pickup configuration. Will be interesting to see if the additional pups bring anything to the table that my two pup Goth (which I love the sound of) doesn’t deliver. Both Goths will have the same strings and pot and cap values so it should be an interesting experiment. I will need to be careful of blowouts when routing, not a lot of meat between the pickups, slow and steady with shallow multiple passes should do the trick.

If anybody has a black Hipshot Supertone bridge they want to sell, I’d be interested in a purchase.
