Some people like them some don't, I like the feel, the tension and the sound, when you first try them they may seem rough but your callouses get accustomed to them quickly and compensate. To me nothing sounds or feels like them, I can usually even pick them out on a recording. When I switched to them in 1972-73 they were the only roundwounds I believe and when you went into a store to buy strings you asked for Rotosounds not roundwounds.
Do you know what the second roundwound string was? I heard GHS made Boomers to compete with 66s, in that they wanted an aggressive roundwound string, though NPS. I know GHS was making strings for Fender (then called Squire if not mistaken) way back.
Nope, (What's NPS?) I used Rotos straight for about twenty years until I started getting dead E strings, I do remember there were others out after a while but I liked the Rotos and stuck with them, I switched to Blue steels sometime in the 90's then switched to DR Sunbeams for a while but now I'm back where I started. Nickel strings sound like dead round wounds to me
. The DR's are too slinky for me, they are very good strings though and last a long time. I never tried Boomers that I can recall. I switched to flats during the early 2000's and tried just about everyone I could get my hands on, I ended up liking La Bellas and Fenders. I've even use half rounds at one time on a fretless, I forgot who makes them, they were the first ones though, sometime around 1980.
Here’s a super close up of some Cobalt Flats with silks. In close up it’s a relatively open winding for a flat, but in reality I don’t feel any edges or surface roughness. The windings on these look a bit smoother and more shiny than the ones you posted if that means anything.
…for some sense of scale, the centerline spacing between the set screws is less than 3/8”

Sorry, NPS= Nickel Plated Steel. I like Blue Steels as well. They don't have "the edge" of Rotos but they sound and feel really good. Those and Rotos were my strings in the 80s. Well, who doesn't like Blue Steel. Much better than Le Tigre which is a softer look most useful for shoes...
