Thunderbird Club

I’ve seen people change out EL-34s for 6L6s (34s are more desirable and sell for a pretty penny) in Marshalls and Hiwatts and get away (not optimally of course) with it……the opposite swap wouldn’t work however….

Oh I didn't mean all power tubes were interchangeable, I just realized what's probably how my post sounded. I just edited it.

We have a small urban lot, but in a wet spring like we are having, a lot of weeds grow in a hurry. The yard waste bin probably weighs 200 lbs this week. It is big, but it is completely full.

The good side is that we have ripe peas, a few strawberries already, and it looks like a bumper crop of cherries. And the potatoes I put in five or so years ago keep multiplying. We have some good onions coming as well. And because it is Seattle, we have lots and lots of flowers.

The bad side is that I am beat now and probably won't pick up a guitar, let alone a Thunderbird or drum sticks.

Worst Spring ever this year - I'm traveling to California in less than two weeks in the hope that I'll actually see the Sun.

Could be worse, we're now in winter. It doesn't get very cold here but it's real humid some days and feels cold, if the sun's out it feel nice during the day. The lowest I've ever seen it is about is about 58 degrees at night.

I was amazed when I opened up that SVT and found the 6L6's in it. I found it in a music store here in Lima on the floor for 300 bucks about 20 years ago. I bought it without even trying it IIRC, as they were still a lot more expensive than that back here even then. I got it home and turned it on, it was humming but sounded pretty good but I noticed it didn't sound like an SVT, sounded more like a Fender tube amp. I think the owner just threw some old 6L6's in it to get rid of it. I never would have thought that different tubes sounded differently from each other at least to that degree until I opened it up after playing around with it for a while because it there was a pronounced difference.

Tubes can make a huge difference! You can revoice preamp or poweramp (or both) by changing tube brands and/or types.

My Ashdown 550 Spyder* comes pretty close to a tube-amp sound. It has a twin-tube pre and is very warm, "tube-ie" sounding. (what Ashdown is known for) Not the same as the Porta-flex 30 watt head, but a close 2nd and more reliable playing live. (the B15 head stays at home other than when recording)

*forever acknowledgement to OVO Chucky for fixing it!
I really dig that Ashdown of yours and imagine is sounds great. I've said before that I took a cheap Ashdown SS head in on trade once and I really loved how warm it sounded. Should have kept it as a spare or something with a different flavor. Without question the warmest SS head/amp I ever played. My Peavey Mk head was not far behind. If I had more money and less sense I'd buy an Ashdown. I'd love to have Chucky's Ashdown rig as well. Just has to sound great.

Yup featureless. Recall that Wanda took pictures of grain elevators because there was nothing else to take pictures of...

The moon has a more interesting landscape than Saskatchewan. When you dog runs away you can still see him going for two days. Mathematically, a pancake has more features than Saskatchewan.
Had Prof in grad school from Saskatchewan. His intellect was something. Authored many books and journal articles. He must have had two brains, yet was as personable and down to earth as they come. Raised on a farm if IRCC.

I bought my 550 Spyder w/o knowing much about them. I watched a YouTube vid on one and it sold me with its simplicity and rich tone. I found one that was supposedly a floor model from a music store in Canada, and I owned it for about a month before it crapped out during a live gig ~ ... long story short - OVO Chucky repaired it and it has delivered faithful service since. I own a few nice amps - but this is my gigging head and it always delivers the sound I want to hear.
