Since the Music Man is my first tube amp, is it normal for it to take 15-30 seconds before you get the volume expected from the settings?
Don’t know about that exact time but a brief warm up period is typical of nearly all tube amps. Most have a standby switch for warm up but I don’t recall if the MM does.

Since you’re new to tube goodness, one absolute rule to follow - never ever under any circumstances ever ever start up that amp unless it’s plugged into a cab, ever! If you fire it up without a cab connection and start playing the bass you’ll likely toast your power transformer, not a cheap fix.

It does. Didn’t know what it did first time I powered it up. Thought it died on the way home. Label says stand by is up but it is actually down…no sound :bawl:

Ah, that’s what that switch is for. So, let it warm up in stand by and then throw the switch?
YES! the standby switch applies the amplification voltage to the tubes…when the amp is on with the standby off you heat up the filaments to create the electron “cloud” around the cathode and filament…..turning all on at once from a cold start will strip the cathode of chunks of its thoriated tungsten lining shortening tube life and in higher powered tube amps possibly lead to tube/amp failure….modern Gallium Nitride amps have a similar start up sequence…

The pre-amp was too nasty. Time for more experimentation.
Like I said, SS distortion isn’t usually a sound most chase but in a few circumstances it might be useful. The inverse is ideal, power section distortion which is volume on zero, master on full, power on half and carefully slowly turn the volume knob up while digging in on the strings with the bass on board vol and tone maxed.

Hello all - long time reader, first time poster (on this thread anyways). Anyways, I would like to humbly submit my application to join this elite club. It’s just an Epi IV (bolt on) with Hipshot Tuners but it is new to me. I played it at band rehearsal the other night and fell in love with how it sounded in the context of my band. Definitely a gateway drug - I’m hooked, and want to save up for the Vintage Pro or a Gibson eventually. View attachment 4772059
Congratulations and welcome!
