Thunderbird Club

I ran across this refinished 76 Bird on eBay. Interesting choice for a refin.

1976 Gibson Thunderbird Bass | eBay

Maybe he's got two, and he's keeping the udder one.

If I owned it, I'd affectionately name it Count Bessie.

And I'd play a lot of Don't Fear The Reaper on it, because, well, you know what they ask for...

Yo, T-Bird Club Members. The great Gibson Victory needs to call in a marker here and get some advice. Looking to get your opinions as to what would be a good reasonably price player and investment piece. Somewhere between bargain basement, and the Holy Grail. All comments are welcome. Thanks!
Great question!
Just thinking out loud here…
- the Tbird Holy Grail for most would be a 1960’s Reverse but those run well north of $5000 to as much as three or four times that depending on condition and rarity. Getting harder to find a reasonable deal on.
- The next step down would most likely be a 1960’s non reverse for between $5000 and $10,000. Getting harder to find.
- Dropping a bit further would most likely score you a Bicentennial bird for between $3000 and $5000. Still readily available.
- next on the list would most likely be a 2013 gold Anniversary bird. Usually findable on Reverb but getting more pricey every year. Expect to pay between $2000 and $3000. Not positive how many they made but it might be as few as 400.
- the 2015 Tbird is unique in almost every aspect and has been going up in value every year. $1500 to $2500 seems to be where the market is at right now. No idea how many were made but they seem to be on the used gear sites fairly regularly.
- the pre 2000 birds seem to be climbing in price but can still usually be had in the sub $2000 bracket
- most everything else from Gibson birdwise is going to be priced in the $1200 and up category, exceptions being one offs like the Hawaiian Tropic suntan bass or the current Mod Shop offerings which are mostly in the $2000 and up category.

If I wanted a middle of the road cost but still collectible bird that I could comfortably gig on a regular basis without too much fear of devaluing it I’d look for a 2013 anniversary or a 2015 bird in excellent shape for around $2000 or less or a Bicentennial Tbird in player condition for $3000 or less. Just my 2cents.

17 or 18 EB

Or the 2013EB, which was the first to use the DeCola pickups, later adopted by the 2015 Tbird.

Yes thats exactly what they look like without the covers. Gibson must have had a big bin of them left over. View attachment 4775477

It'a a good design as long as the strings line up reasonably well.

Wilkinson (version) hum-bucker's - neck pu is the non-exposed pole version. Center is a platform/block to physically bridge the two pu's. Fender/Kubicki 9v pre, Saunders P-clone neck made at the Fender Custom Shop in the late '80s.

Sounds great! Would love to know what pedals you used on that recording.

Boy, that was a while ago... I'm going to say similar to what I still use more or less.

This is my current pedal chain* - MXR bass d.i.+ (always on) Boss CS-2 Compression/Sustainer (always on) as it would have been on that recording. Mic'd SWR 4x10 Goliath/400s head - truthfully the bass tone/sound comes from the Fender/Kubicki 9v pre - it has a very distinctive/characteristic footprint. I can pick it out in a crowd.

*I run an outboard BBE Sonic Stomp from the amp into the pedal chain these days but didn't have it at that point. Also recently swapped the Ibanez Stereo Chorus (in the pic below) for an MXR Bass Chorus Deluxe w/flanger. (above pic) Funny how they are both blue. I still like the Ibanez Chorus, but the MXR bcd is two pedals in one and it sounds great! Plus, it keeps things symmetric... (MXR/Boss/MXR/Boss/MXR/Boss) :) Too bad they didn't call their pedal the bass d.i.+ deluxe...

Sounded really great in that context. It's funny, I had to listen from the Sound Cloud site and to the right where the there is a category #button (whatever they call it) and it was "#Disco." I must say I like the new disco better than the old disco!

Are you ok with a black and white “cow” paint job?
