Have you ever tried Dean Markely Blue Steels? They are the least steel feeling string I recall playing. (If you ever wanted a steel that didn't feel like steel. Even new, I don't recall that grippy feel.)
Haven’t tried those, but I’m really happy with the SITs and Dunlops. Both are a lot smoother than Rotos. And both sound great.

Wasn't the bass just shipped from Gibson? Could be that traveling in hot and humid weather had a side effect on the insert?
^^^This. The temperature and humidity changes likely caused it. It also may have been bounced around during shipping.
Ken, I would just make sure the ground wire is in place, put a bit of wood glue on that ferrule and tap it back in. Leave it overnight before re-installing the bridge.

You’re thinking of the washer fluid. There was no pump. It used air pressure from the spare.
Correct. On all three of my VW Beetles, there was no electric pump for the windshield washer fluid, the washer tank (or bag) was under pressure from the air in the spare tire. I remember, with my first beetle, thinking I ran out of washer fluid. Because it rained so infrequently I just never got around to topping the fluid off. Then one day I got a flat tire and went to install my spare, only to find out it was flat too. But on the bright side, there was still washer fluid in the reservoir!

I wish. But I have another gear purchase in the works once I start working again. Should be a couple weeks or so. And besides, my wife figured out how many basses I have. I think my son ratted me out even though they’re all in plain view, just in a bunch of different places.
The trouble with blackmail. Once you give up the information, you no longer have a hold on the victim. But if you never reveal the inf, your sincerity in using it comes into doubt. The best blackmail involves two pieces of information. You can reveal the least bad as a demonstration of willingness to release the devastating.

Not that I have put a lot of thought into this...

For me the limiting factors are space - I have a nice music room, but it can’t hold much more than 22 basses and 6 guitars, even with some in cases. Plus I often have a few instruments I’m repairing.

And not to be morbid, but having been an executor two times in the last couple of years, I am seriously starting to think about what my family will do with all my stuff when I kick the bucket.
Selling a few instruments is one thing, but assuming my daughter would keep a few, she would still be looking at selling 20 or so. That’s a fair bit of work!

Is the spare tire operated washer carried over from the Beetle to the 911? ;):D

Same boat. Can’t take it with you, and the kids may not truly appreciate the entire collection. The wife might not have any concept of the value, and unscrupulous experts could make a killing in snatching up the bunch at well below market values then flipping them for boat loads of profit. Fortunately I have everything detailed and documented and valued. But I still may have to resort to selling off gear at some point. I just hate to let go, everything I have I have because I really like it.

LOL - you know I should be able to answer that question right off the top of my head, but truth be told, I don’t really positively know for sure. I suspect my 1997 911 has an electric pump and not a spare tire air feed. But I never drive the car in the rain and have never used the wipers or washers or refilled the washer tank. So I really don’t know for sure without confirming. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see it on the early 911 and 356 models.

edit: just checked, as I suspected, it’s electric.

Well it seems like I was able to fix it. At least for now. At a friend's suggestion, I took off the bridge, screwed down a bolt about halfway, put a small block of wood on top, and lightly hammered and it went back down. We'll see if it holds, but I put the bridge back on and restrung.

Nope. I guess you weren't around when I first got this bass. The entire bridge and pickup alignment is off. They're all aligned together, just off-centered within the center block. Gibson is replacing it if and when there's another run of lefties.
[rhetorical question] how the 7ell does that get past QC?[/rhetorical question]
